Hi, we are thinking of sending our helper to driving lessons as we are planning on getting a car. We would pay for all of it of course. We think she is quite switched on and could become a good driver. Her primary duty would still be domestic duties but we thought it would not hurt having her know how to drive if occasionally we would need her driving services. So, my question to you is: (1) is it OK (legal) to add driving to domestic duties; (2) where do we send her for driving lessons; (3) how much does it cost and how long does it take; (4) how do we get insurance for her when she drives the car - e.g. third party liability, collision etc. So would our own car insurance include/cover our helper as well as a driver or can we add her? Thanks for all your inputs. As you can tell, we are very new in this topic. Thanks.

First you will need permission from Immigration for her to legally be able to drive for you and be aware of the restrictions that Immigration places on this. There is the HK School of Motoring and various others. As for how long and how much, well how long is a piece of string? Everyone takes differing amounts of time to learn, but it is not cheap here. For insurance you would need to add her as a named driver and let the insurance company know she is your FDH.

I do believe that it is illegal for you to have your helper drive you. Helpers can drive kids to school but they cannot drive you to work etc...
I guess you could get away with it by always ducking down in the back seat so the cops think the car is empty but that's a bit inconvenient eh...

Helpers actually cannot drive anyone, even the kids, without a permit from immigration. Driving someone to work requires a further permit.

Thanks for everybody's input and direction. It looks promising since we just would require her on an ad hoc basis for tasks (excluding pick up and drop-off to work) which are within the domestic duties definition as per the immigration's rule. Thank you again.

another question. I called hong kong motor school and the all in price is HK$9,808. Are there any other schools out there or deals or is this it? Thanks.

that's about the price for the entire course including test fees as there is a minimum number of hours one must complete before given a license
but i would go with the instructors where beancurd mentioned
see this other website for reference
