Im willing to pay extra for cantonese domestic helper but all the agencies I see on line are for filipinos and other southeast asian countries. Are there any agencies that work with cantonese domestic helpers? Any advise is greatly appreciated!

I hate a part time local dh and I must say she was very, very good. Being a part time, the quality of her service had to be exceptional otherwise she would lose her clients.
She was actually like a mother to us. She even taught my wife how to make chinese soup and to cook.
But eventually we moved way too far from the area that she works in.

In the old days, there used to be a lot of local housewives who were doing P/T DH in the day-time when their husbands were at work and children in schools but they changed to working in factories as the pay & time were better. For live-in, people hired amahs then. Nowadays, most of the factories in HK are closed so the trend of these housewives who needed extra monies are back in the market. You have to ask around to get them as they don't advertise and it's mostly through words of mouth or introduction. As tpol says, they are good as long as it's part-time help you need as they can't be counted to do child-minding nor helping out with the elderly.

dendy,
Sorry as I didn't give you an exact answer to your question in my previous post.
I guess you can ask your husband to ask around in his office - somewhere out there, be it a relative, a friend or a friend's friend can sort of connect you to one. Maybe even talking to your doorman, the cleaner etc. etc. Merry maids advertised here in Asiaxpat are well trained P/T helpers, maybe some may wished to turn full-time as their family situation somehow changed.
Above suggestions are just my thought - hope it helps.

Since you are requesting for a Chinese helper I assume you speak and read chinese.
Here are some Govt sites that may help:
http://www.gov.hk/en/residents/employment/recruitment/domestichelper.htm
http://www.erb.org/smartliving/master_network.php
It's part of the retraining system.

i don't think that part time local cantonese helpers are expensive at all, because they tend to be very hard working and efficient. they are also highly skilled. however, they are quite scarce because so many households want to use them these days.
jessieyyt, i would be very grateful if u would kindly pm me the details of the helper you mentioned. thanks!

I just spoke to Smart Living people who you can register for a local domestic helper. It is approx 3,700 HKD for 4 hrs per day x 5 days. They only speak cantonese with little or no english. Would be keen to know if any non-chinese speaker has hired a Chinese helper. I'm thinking it might be a good way to learn cantonese and also helper may wish to improve on english - has anyone used this service, would be keen to know how it worked?
