My helper goes to bed at around 8.30 - 9.00 even though we have not had dinner. I want her to stay up to wash the dishes but she wakes up at six but does she have to wake up that early considering my child is only one and does not go to school and doesn't wake up till eight.

My helper is a morning person, used to get with her own kids. She is off to her room by 8:00-8:30 pm and usually lights out by 9 pm. She gets up early by habiy, not usually by choice.

You do have dinner rather late. Like cara said, is there any chance you could eat a little earlier? Or the dishes can be done in the morning.

Helpers tend to do alot of work throughout the day and get tired (like anyone would), hence going to bed by 9:00

My helper normally goes to sleep around 9, and gets up before 6, even though we've told him he doesn't have to get up that early. But we eat at 6 -6.30, so he has all evening to himself.

Agreed with cara. Who cares when she washes the dishes as long as they are done? Better to let her sleep on her own hours if that's what she likes and it can be accomodated

our kids have dinner around 6:30pm and I wait for my husband to be back home to have dinner with him, around 8:30pm/9pm.

Our helper always cleans the kitchen after our dinner and honestly I appreciate it as I'm scared the leftovers would attract some coackroachers or other insects. I think it's better to clean before the night so there is no food/no smell around.

She wakes up at 6:30am.

She told us she was working much longer in the night in the previous family so she is very happy with our schedules.

Leave the sink full of water and a bit of detergent and put the dishes in there.

If you don't want to do the dishes yourself or leave the dishes in the sink, can you ask her to change her hours from 7/8am-10pm instead of 6-8:30-9? If she has trouble changing her schedule, perhaps suggest she stay up til 11 one night, take a bit of melatonin and sleep/rest til 7 or 8am so she will fit your schedule? She may not know how helpful that would be to you.

If I'm up and eating that late, I scrub off my dishes and put them in the dishwasher or sink.

axptguy38, we have 2 small children and I can tell you that after dinner it's a big mess around the table. Also, the sink is too small to put all the dishes and the pans. And we always put our rubbish bag out before to go to bed for the same reasons.

Well, I guess it's a personal question, everyone has its own standard of hygiene. I just wanted to share our own routine.

Have you got room in your kitchen for a dish washer, then you could just load your dishes in, and your helper could empty it in the morning, that is what we do

itsmeinhk, just trying to come up with options. However if you really want her to do the dishes in the evening you should ask her to do that. Just make sure (as you have) that this doesn't cut too much into her sleep time.

As Susie1 says, a dishwasher is also an option.

Or another option is, you could rinse off the food/leftovers and leave on the counter to be washed in the morning. Often in the evening my husband and I have a snack at 9 or 10 pm. We don't wash the dishes, but run them under warm water to rinse and leave them for the morning. Never in 7 years have they attrached bugs or such

our helper goes to her room anytime after 7.30. my kids are in bed by 7. and hubby doesnt come home until 9.30. so i lay dinner and i sometimes do the dishes and sometimes if im tired i dont!!! we hv touchwood not had any roach probs. hving said that she wakes at 5.30 and i wake at 6. but if im tired i can always take a nap in the noon something she cant cos she has her daily chores to do. shes v happy with the timing cos gvs her enough time to tk a shower and talk on phone, read or sleep. her choice what she does after that.

helpers usually wake up before their employers so that the house is in order when you wake up.

would you prefer it if she slept in late while you guys are up and about so that she can sleep late just to do your dishes?

your household help is a human being not the energizer bunny.

as with the suggestions above, make a compromise with her regarding work hours and duties.
