The hospital authority in HK is doing a great job and Ruttonjee is a very reliable hospital. Don't worry, she's in good hand.

Under HK law it is illegal to terminate a DH b/c of illness. If the employer got away with this without the terminated DH taking them to the Labour Dept. they are very lucky.

Please go and meet the doctor.Yr helper will feel much better if you do so. Sometimes the underlying cause could be tuberculosis. If so then your family will need to do some screening tests to rule it out.and yr helper will need 6 months of treatment. If just pneumonia, then just antibiotics for her.It is a curable disease.Hope this helps.Don't panic pls.

Hi everyone..thanks a lot for ur inputs...

theres no question of terminating at all..it hasnt even entered my mind...i was the one who admitted her and have been visiting her...i saw the hospital..it seems ok...the nurses seemed polite but not very convinced about the bedside manners...

cara is right...i wanted to see the doc but apart from her initial check up for which i insisted to be there have not been able to see any other doc to fig out her condition...

and yes am taking her lunch and dinner from home and have bought her basic stuff like towels, soaps, tooth paste etc....slippers are a good idea will get her today when i go see her in the eve...

thanks a lot again everyone..

I just thought of something. Since you are not next of kin the doctor should be forbidden from discussing her condition with you without the helper's explicit permission.

The doctor usually comes in the morning so you can ask the nurse-in-charge for a convenient time - theirs not yours.

The name of the doctor who attends to your helper is listed on a card just behind the wall of the patient's bed. He usually does his round in the morning so the best thing is to talk to the nurse to see if it's necessary to see the doctor or maybe the nurse herself can fill you in with the details if it's not a serious matter. The reason is he comes into the ward and if he doesn't have too many of his patients in that particular ward, he pops in and out before you can say "hi" and your effort of waiting for him would be in vain.

You cannot compare hospital food to outside 'cuisine' but the nourishment is there.

smsm, don't stress yourself too much as you don't have to take lunch & dinner to her everyday as all meals(even fruits and health drinks), doctor's fee, medicine etc. etc. are included in the daily room charge (I think in the range of $70-$100) It's a very good deal and most important - reliable.

Mobile phone is allowed in the ward so you both can communicate with each other.

Hi...i did manage to speak to the nurse in the evening and she updated me about her progress. Was quiet satisfied with the care she was getting, had initial apprehensions but saw those fading away...

actually my helper was really not able to eat the food provided hence thought she might as well eat some good food in order to get better soon...also stocked her with some juices, fruits etc...dont think thats offered there as she said none of these were provided...

thanks again everyone...

There's juice in the morning and she can choose either oatmeal or congee and an orange provided in the evening meal. For lunch & dinner, she can choose either soft or hard rice with the vegetable/meat or fish.

But anyway, glad to know she's doing ok. She's very lucky to have an employer like you who goes all the way out to help her.

My helper got discharged on thus and I just wanted to say that its an excellent hospital. The docs were so thorough with all kind of tests and making sure that all the possibilites were explored. I was really pleasantly surprised.

thought let me share this for future ref...
