I have realised that my helper of 3.5 years has been going for a late night walk at ard 1030 1045 and coming back ard 11 1130..She keeps the main door open (not wide open but in a way that she can press the latch and come in and doesnt have to ring the bell)..Well I am just not comfortable with that...I have 2 small kids and I dont want to be worrying about whether my helper has come back in on time or not or to stay awake till she comes back. The other option is that she takes the key with her but I am not comfortable with that either at that late in night. She does go out with my lil one twice a day out to the playground so its not that shes cooped up in the house all day long. I can understand if she needs to go once in a while but not comfortable with it becoming a habit. I haven't yet spoken to her but will do so shortly..
what do you think..is it ok to talk to her or am I being too petty..

It is her free time. If she wants to go for a walk on her free time, she should be free to do so. What's the problem?
You should not worry about the helper "coming back on time". If she comes back at three in the morning that is her business. As long as she is "fit for duty" the next morning. If she is too tired to work well, then you can point out that she can do as she likes, but you need her to be able to work. How she manages her sleep is her responsibility.
Why are you not comfortable with her having a key? Helpers should be given a key. They are not children.
"she does go out with my lil one twice a day out to the playground so its not that shes cooped up in the house all day long."
So what? Those two playground jaunts are WORK. If she wants to go for a walk she wants to go for a walk. How would you feel if your employer stopped you from leaving the building in your free time?

Many people like to take a walk in the evenings before going to bed ... it may be their only form of exercise. You can hardly class a couple of trips to the playground with your child as exercise for your helper ... it's not just about being couped up in the home all day. I'd be more concerned about the fact that she leaves the door unlocked late at night when she goes out walking ... what's the problem with her having a key? Surely she has a key during the day when she's out with your child, or out shopping ... do you take it off her again in the evenings?? As cara said, she is an adult, she should be entitled to a key, and if you don't think she's responsible enough to have a key then how can she be responsible enough to look after you most precious possession ... your child?

I don't quite understand the problem. Well, the only problem for me is, leaving a door open and your helper not having a key.
My helper "occasionally", maybe 2 or 3 times a week, will go out. Sometimes just to get out, she will go to another floor we hasve for the residents (sitting area) and read a book. And sometimes just go for a walk to to the Mall, which is a 4 minute walk. She will do this after 8:00 or 9:00 pm, when she is all done work for the day.

agree with all of you...thought about it with a cool mind and told her to take the key with her....I just found out that shes fast asleep and has forgotten to lock the door so If I hadnt seen now it would have been open the whole night...now this kind of stuff I am not comfortable with..She is very forgetfull overall but is great with my child..I have to continuously put reminders on the fridge for her to do things in a consistent manner..which is not a problem so far as its working fine but to be honest I will defintely be not able to sleep till shes back if this happens again!!

How about she goes out in the mornings only before work?.
You need your rest. It's not fair of her to make you stay up and worry.

How about you tell her to be back from her walks at whatever time you go to bed? I don't know how late she works, but I also like to check that my doors are locked before I can go to sleep. Is she working til 10:30?That's very late, but even so, if she goes for a walk at 9 that would be better for you. You could check that the doors are locked and she could finish her work. Good luck.

She should be able to go out whenever she wants. If she likes to take walks at two in the morning, that's her business. As long as she doesn't wake you up when she goes in and out...
notyou, what exactly is there to worry about? Worst case you get a door lock that locks itself behind her when she exits.
