Do you think it's necessary to do a medical before hiring a helper?

If so, what do you check for and where do you do it? Do most helpers take this as the norm and agree...would love to hear from employers who have and haven't got there helper to do this. Wondering if that I need to do it for the insurance later, in case she had anything come up later (like pre-existing stuff) thanks all.

As cara says. For the first contract, I would deffo demand a medical exam. Helpers tend to think this is normal. This should include venereal and infectious diseases, as well as pregnancy.

For renewal, we didn't bother.

The insurance company didn't ask if she had had a medical exam.

Yes we did one for our helper, results were good, which I think re-assures the employer and helper.

okay great thanks I think I get her to do it then. As I'm not going through an agency (finished contract) can anyone recommend as to where to get it done...I've remember seeing ads for a few places offering DH medical checks but can't remember where as it was ages ago. Also would prefer to send her somewhere that is okay and reasonably priced. thank you again

Thanks Susie1. I feel kinda bad asking her to get checked even for STDs but then again I do have kids and she is gonna be living with me. It's kinda like guilty until proven innocent on her part but better safe than sorry on our part I guess! Specially if she is sharing the bathroom with the kids!

I wouldn't say that, it is quite a normal thing to do, remember you are inviting someone to live in you house to care for your family, that you don't know, and you don't know their history either. So having a comprehensive check up should re-assure both you and the helper, and if something minor did show up then it could be treated quite easily.

if you have a baby or child, have your potential dh be tested for tuberculosis also

The reason the govt requires a health check for the first contract is not to "protect" the employer but to ensure that the FDH will not be a drain on the HK health system. We had a helper application refused because she tested positive to Hep B.

Incidentally, STDs are transmitted via bodily fluids not by sharing a bathroom so there is little risk to your kids in that circumstance, mixeymum. Good hygiene practices (by all members of the household) should be sufficient assurance to family health.

Agreed with smallfy on the STDs. The chances of an STD being transmitted through anything but sexual contact (or sharing needles) are slim to none. That's why they're classified as "sexually transmitted". Sharing a bathroom with someone who has an STD is pretty much risk free from that standpoint.

Hi Kuafor,

You may call Evelyn Reyes at Asiaxpat office for a medical examination coverage, cost and location .She can arrange this for your helper and the result takes a couple of days.
