Hi - my wife is being relocated to singapore for a year in a month, and we need a FT helper to take care of our dog (and do normal housework etc).
We currently have a part-time helper who we like and has indicated that she's willing to break her contract and sign on with us.
Looking at the HK immigration website, it appears that in order to break her contract she'll need to go back to the philippines for 4-6 weeks while her new application is processed.
Is that right? Does anyone know any services or lawyers that can help expedite that? Or any way around that? (2-3weeks would be ok... 6 weeks wouldn't really work).

You are correct.
She must return to the Philippines whilst her new contract & visa is processed by HK Imm.
It usually takes 4-6 weeks. Haven't heard of anyone being able to shortcut this time frame.

One more question - the earliest she will be able to resign from her current contract is July 12th, at which point she'll go back to the philippines and wait out her visa application with the new contract.
Is it possible to submit her new contract application now to cut down on the wait time? what is the downside in doing that?

I don't believe you can expedite the process that way, by trying to process the contract while she's still working here. You could try, but I think they can only start the process once she's in the Philippines. I could be wrong there though.
You also need to hire an agency, and pay around $3000, for the service. This should cover her airfare from Manila to HK, medical check, all fees and charges etc etc. The Philippines consulate will not allow you to hand in the application yourself - they require the agency to bring over the helper from Ppines.

As Slammy said, the process usually starts from when the DH leaves HK.
The Agency requirement is a nice little extra that you probably weren't planning on. This change came about in 2009. So maids still aren't aware and may tell you otherwise.

I also didn't know which agency to turn to and I got this contact because Josie is married to one of my colleagues, so I knew for sure they wouldn't rip me off!
I think their fees are pretty standard and cover everything. Mind you, I had already filled out all the forms myself, because I had tried to hand everything in to the Philippines Consulate, only to be told I needed an agency.
