We are going overseas for 2 weeks and our helper has taken this opportunity to see if she could get 5 days away to go back to Philippines. Has anyone done this before? I don't mind allowing this but would like to know what precautions I should take and what are possible bad scenarios.
For starters, she would have to agree that it's non-paid leave. She being responsible for the airfare (must be return airfare). No advance in salary.

I don't see the problem. You are in charge but by all means be generous. If it fit with your schedule go for it.

@axptguy38 - I don't see a problem either - we have a good relationship and I don't see why should wouldn't want to continue working or tell us if she had problems. Despite this it's hard to get rid of all the paranoia that stigmatizes DH.

What are you paranoid about? What are you afraid will happen?
If you're afraid she'll steal something and never return, then lock up your valuables.

Stealing, taking out a loan and then running, going through our personal stuff/information (this last point not relevant to her going on holiday). Much of what I fear is probably irrational because if she's out to do something, she can do a lot of things at anytime not needing to wait for this opportunity.
When we told her yesterday that we'll be away for 2 weeks she reacted quite strangely - a bit surprised and then kind of apprehensive/concerned. I asked if she was worried, if she would be comfortable being here alone. But nothing. This morning she only mentioned something about her mom back home (not sure if she misses her or if she is sick) We are going to sit down talk of course. I was posting to see if others have experiences on this they could share.

Shylok, why not let your helper go away for two weeks then? She'll think you're doing her a huge favour, but at the same time, she won't be around in your home while your gone?

If she doesn't ask for advance payment nor financial help, it would be a good time to show your generous nature towards her and if she is a sincere helper, I am sure she will appreciate this gesture.
You should ask her to come back a day before your return to dust up the place and prepare food if necessary so that you come home to a clean environment & have something to eat in the evening as your family should be tired after the trip.

Just want to add that some helpers don't want to go home too often, since their families will often expect them to pay for everything when they are home.

No paid leave? But I thought helpers get 2 weeks holiday per contract anyway? Why not deduct the 5 days from the 2 weeks holiday obligation you owe her for the contract?
If my helper asks for advanced salary, I think I would give this to her. It is no different to a helper doing a bad job because she wants to leave your employment. Then you fire her on the spot and have to pay one month's salary anyway. Regarding paying for her airfare, it really depends on how long she's been with you. A helper who has worked with me for 1.5 years and has done a brilliant job - I would pay for. A helper who has worked for 2 months - it is unlikely I will pay.

thanks for the advice everyone. She has worked for me for half a year, and sure I have trust issues if that means I don't trust her 100%. Anyways, the tickets are booked and I'm giving her some advance...otherwise it wouldn't be a happy holiday for her with nothing left to spend.

Great decision Shylok,
I think you will win a great deal of points with her for this.
