Process of hiring a domestic helper from overseas

Hi

We are moving to Hong Kong next months with 3 years old, and thinking of hiring a live-in domestic helper. I understand that there are quite a few of agencies in Hong Kong.

But what if I wanted to hire someone from overseas? What is the process? A friend of mine has a live-in DH and her twin sister lives in Phillipine at the moment and wants to work as a DH in Hong Kong. We will of course interview her first, but have no idea as to what kind of process we have to take, and how long it would take to get a permission for her to work in HK etc etc.

Does anyone know what kind of process we need to take?

Many thanks

"I understand that there are quite a few of agencies in Hong Kong. "

Tons of them. AsiaXpat runs one of the better ones.

More or less the same as hiring one that is in HK actually. Same contract, same conditions. The only real differences are that a candidate already in HK who has completed a country does not require an agency to process her hire, and it can take a bit shorter time. In any case you're looking at 5-10 weeks for processing in most cases.

My suggestion is to engage a good agency to handle the logistics since this is your first time. They will help out with everything for only a few thousand HK$. As mentioned AsiaXpat runs a good agency.

There is a book called "Hiring and Managing Domestic Help" which would be useful, mostly with the interviewing and management aspects.

Thanks axptgy38. I was told today that we can no longer process application ourselves i.e. have to go through an agent for direct-hire. On top of that, if she has not worked in HK before, she has to take some courses on top of chinese language lesson...

I will have to think about it again for direct-hire. It might be easy to go through an agency.

Many thanks!

Yepp. The agency thing came along pretty recently, as did the courses.

Agencies are supposed to make your life easier. Totally worth the money as a first timer.

Thanks for the details, beancurd. This Philipina girl will visit Hong Kong for an interview (she is a family member of my friend's helper in Hong Kong), then we have to process everything. Only thing is that I have 3 years old boy and my time is really limited to do paper work ect - only 3 hours a day while he is at school...

You mentioned that I have approx. HK$3,250.00 to an agency that includes training program for the helper. someone also said that she would have to go to Chinese language course as well. How often does she have to go to these courses and how long per day, do you know?

This is just giving me a headache at the moment.... It is so easy to hire a helper where I live, no need to go to an agency.

It's not really that hard if you have a good agency helping out. All you have to do is find, interview, select, pay and sign.

"How often does she have to go to these courses and how long per day, do you know?"

As far as I know she will do the courses before she starts.
