Hi all,
Do you guys keep your valuables in a safe when you have a FDH?
I am thinking of doing that, as a just in case (less headaches if things go missing!).
Any suggestions where I can buy a small one that will fit documents and jewellery?
Thanks!!!

We do keep our valuables in a small safe. We trust our helper 100% but it is still a good idea.
Wing-On, Sogo, Fortress and PriceRite sell safes.

My boss have,in fact one is in my room. And leave the keys with all our other keys.
Also I have some jewelries worth over HK 70k worth lying around too. And could leave my pc on ( as she does) and we know no one will cross the line.

This thread make me sad... if things go missing, the maid gets the blame. Never mind that employers opens their house to friends and relatives and other workers.
Above comment not directed to OP, btw.

souffleQueen, it isn't really about that. Many honest people feel at least some temptation if they see valuables lying around. It is human nature. Easier to bypass the whole issue by removing the temptation. As I said, we trust our helper 100% and often have valuables lying around. But most stuff is in the safe.
It is also to the helper's benefit, as she is protected when it isn't her fault.

I trust my helper but sometimes I misplace a piece of valuable jewelry. Later, I may look for a day or two before I finally find it. So, If i did not have a safe, I would start having this unpleasant feeling of "what if she took it?"

I bought a safe many years ago before we ever had a helper, because our house was broken into and all sorts of things taken, including sentmental family heir loomes, I feel much happier having all important documents and jewelry locked away, so by all means get a safe, Wing on sell good ones with a key and electronic code you can set in, as they are very heavy, they always deliver, and will place it where you want it.

Thanks so much for all the good suggestions!
I will check out the above places :)
I guess, it's good to have it and keep all important documents / valuables in one place :)
Really appreciate the advice!

have you considered opening a safe deposit box ?

Hey Wiz Bang,
Already bought a safe yesterday, from Pricerite.
Got the smallest one, which was on sale.
I think it is more convenient to have it at home to store my passports, documents, jewellery, receipts etc :)
But having said that, no, actually I didn't think about opening a safe deposit box LOL.

hi cara - it's still relatively heavy (about 30kgs I think - the lady was explaining in cantonese but I couldn't quite catch it), and can be bolted to the wall apparently, so it should still be "safe" :P

As zilin1712 says, the lighter ones can all be bolted. 30 kg counts as light. ;)

it never hurts to open a safe deposit box for items that are not used frequently like documents, passport (if you don't fly often), jewelry etc.
the plus thing about a safe box as compared to one bolted at home is that if you are away from your home for a period of time, is that it will give you a little peace of mind i.e. what if there is a fire or something?
on the other hand - just a little thought on safes - doesn't having a safe at home give out blaring signals to would be thieves? i.e. AHA A SAFE, something must be worth stealing inside.
glad you got your safe

Depends where you put your safe and who you tell about it. At the back of a closet is a good place. And there's always the classic behind an ancestor's painting above the mantelpiece. ;)

to axptguy
- the closet is the first place i would look for stuff
- ah yes above the mantelpiece - above the fireplace behind the picasso ... or maybe in the library /study room in a normal tiny hk flat - why didn't i think of that in the first place :D
but perhaps i could keep the safe in the pantry cupboard instead or under fido's bed ;)
on to the next topic - where is the best place to hide a safe aside from the obvious wardrobe (unless the wardrobe opens up to Narnia)

Does this mean having a safe is more of a problem now? :)
As I said before, one of the safe in the house is in my room, in my closet. Perhaps the lat place a thief would look at :)).
@ axpat, I know. It's just that from previous threads on here, that seems to be the case.
If I find out that my suppose employer would feel the need to get safe before hiring me.... I would certainly walk out, right away. A good helper /employer is a plus but thrusting and trustworthy, in this case are pluses magnified.

souffle ---> ha ha ha. given the size of most hk flats, as i said if i was a thief - that is the very first place i would look for valuables.
no it's not a problem having a safe - it is a good idea...
but given the size of the average hk flat - where would one keep a safe where a thief would least likely to find a safe?
just a thought really
