Helper Lied about Internet in Interview

ORIGINAL POST

Hi, I am hiring a helper who said she didn't know how to use a computer/internet during the interview.

Recently, I came across her Facebook page.

Should I be concerned or is this common?

I think she is a good fit for our family but honesty is very important to me.

I suspect the issue is about the lying......I wouldn't hire her even if she seemed a good fit because I'm sure you'll be able to find another good fit and to start off with lies does not bode well for the future.

Also I thin it is important to accurately know if someone living in your house is computer literate. For me, I have some important confidential documents stored on my PC but because my helper is not computer literate I do not always shut them down when I go to have a shower, a quick walk ect, would be a different issue if she was computer literate and there was a risk she would look/use my pc.

I seem to remember a thread where the helper was using her employers pc without permission.

As cara says, use a password to protect your data. Apart from actual computer skills, there is the risk that someone will accidentally delete data.

I trust our helper and our kids implicitly, but I never leave my computer unlocked. It's just common sense.

In the Phil. you can buy a Facebook Sim Card that cost HK$ 6 almost unlimited use.

It works using a mobile phone with internet browser and it works all over the country, even on a small villages. You dont need to know how to use pc or internet.

As other poster says, it might be a friend who set up an facebook account on their behalf....

My computer follows me to work, so the only time it is at home is when I am off. As I am in my home (my place of peace), I don't wish to obsessively password the pc especially when I take a quick walk with my child, have a shower. Of course it is locked when I go out. That said I would prefer to know if my helper had internet/pc skills and was more than likely to try to jump on for a bit......kind of like how many helpers think about the TV, if the employer isn't using it, it's okay to watch it as it does no harm.

Not sure if this is cloud9cruisers' issue but it is mine. Btw have told my helpers in no uncertain terms that my pc is off limits.

If you trust your helper, there is no issue. She won't go on the computer or watch TV unless she has explicit permission.

If you lock your computer and there is a password that should be enough. Hardly obsessive.

my computer is set so that to have the password protection activated i have to formally close it down or log off not just close the screen nor will it do it automatically after a certain amount of time. it has been set up by my company for me as i am not the most pc saavy person and I know their reasons for configuring it this way. so in my case only, it requires that every time i take a shower, pop out for the mail, went to another floor ect i would have to formally shutdown my pc and then restart it when i come back which is a total hassle for me, i'd prefer it if i understood appropriately if my helper were more likely to access my pc so that I would shut it down every single time (what I do at work religiously).

If you have a PC pressing Windowsbutton+"L" will lock it and require a password to unlock. No need to log out or shut down. Try it.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I've password protected my computer and it shouldn't be an issue.
