How do you go about a trial? How much do you pay or don't you pay? We have a baby so that should be considered.

Technically she may not work for you. So definitely do not pay. However of course you may of course make the interview a long and hands-on one. There's your trial.

and give her a situational interview to see what she would do in given certain situations.

I personally don't think a trial of 4 hours would show the true personality and capability of a helper, they are bound to be on their 'best behaviour' for 4 hours, then that could change for better or worse once hired. Plus technically if you pay her for 4 hours work it is illegal to employ part time helpers, which you would be doing.

Susie1, of course you are correct. But the same can be said for any job interview. A good interviewer can tell in way less than 4 hours about a person. We hired our helper on the basis of a five minute interview. And yes, we could definitely figure out her personality in those five minutes.

"How come axptguy38 you said do not pay her?"

Because paying her is technically illegal since she may not work for you without a contract.

For the record, I think payment is the morally correct thing to do. But note, illegal. Now, what people do on their own time I don't get into if you know what I mean.

I received the following personal message from a member on the subject of this thread. I'd rather keep the discussion in the thread so I'll respond here.

"How do you NOT pay a worker even under a trial .???

Xpatguy.....You sure do have strange ideas about work ethic and morals ....."

Please read my previous post. I think paying is morally fine. However it is illegal. If you pay you are breaking the law.

I would also note that a normal office worker who goes to an interview and has to demonstrate skills does not get paid for his/her time. Even if the interview(s) take hours and hours of time in total. It is an investment of time from the interviewee on the hope that employment will result.

I think 4 hours as an interview/trial is excessive. As beancurd points out, first impressions go a long way. If it takes more than 30 minutes to form an impression of a person, you should look over your interview technique.

Using a 4 hour trial/interview as free labour is of course a despicable practice.

Helpers take risks with employers too! How should they assess their true personality?

Of course you must be decent and hand over money if she does your cleaning, even if its only 4hours.
