Salary for a Domestic Helper

ORIGINAL POST

Hi, We are looking to move to HK very soon and hence trying to calculate the cost of living there.

Domestic helper will be a necessity for sure. I read different posts on this topic but one question remains unanswered. Are all the maids from overseas viz. Philippines, etc?

Can they take up part-time live-out jobs? like for a few hours in a day? Aren't there any local maids available?

And of course the question is how much would you pay a domestic helper?

Eds' Note - update salary requirements for domestic helpers in HK can be found on the HK Labour Department website

there are many foreign part time helpers available but most of them are not allowed to do part time work legally . even though its illegal it is common thing to hire part time helpers , their rates are around 50 hk$ to 80 $ hk$ per hour .

If you going to hire a full time helper minimum wage should be HK$ 4010.00 per month and free food or food allowance in lieu, which is HK$920 per month . according to the law helper should be live in.

also you can hire a full time live out helper ( illegal , but common ) in that case you will have to pay for a accommodation some thing around hk$2500 to hk$3500 additionally .

there are local maids available and their really expensive.dont have much details about rates ...

Merrymaids provide legal part time helpers, click on the side panel to find them, and their rates.

Hiring another persons foreign domestic helper is illegal, they are only allowed ,and insured to work for their employer/sponsor, there are big fines for the helper and the person who employs them illegally.

Most of the foreign domestic helpers in Hk, are from Philapinnes, Indonesia, Sri Lanka or Thailand, they have to live in your home, also on top of their wages, you are responsible for medical bills, it is wise to take out helper insurance and also make them have a medical before employing them, or signing the final comtract,to rule out pregnancy or infectious disease. The employer is also responsible for the cost of a helpers flight into HK, and return flight at the end of a two year contract.

As there are no nurseries in Hk for very young children people have to rely on helpers, if you really need a domestic helper try to get recommendation from people who are leaving HK, don't rely on written references as these are not always reliable.

"I read different posts on this topic but one question remains unanswered." and then you go on and list 5 different questions. I don't know which posts you have been reading as all your questions are easily answered from various replies in this discussion forum. And in this time and age, don't you know how to Google about domestic helpers in HK? Try the Immigration first... http://www.immd.gov.hk/en/foreign-domestic-helpers.html

Ouch Christelita - if google was perfect no one would use these forums. Give her break,.. its perfectly natural that someone not yet in HK finds the unknown a little daunting..... and i believe the correct expression is ... "in this DAY and age" Google it.
