I would like some explanation as to why there are no (at least I have not met any) Mandarin-speaking, Chinese helpers. With a quarter of the world's population, isn't there a way to get a Mandarin-speaking DH? Anyone out there done this? Only through the Labor Dept? Thank you.

There are. The Labour Dept (although it sounds like you might not want to hear that) has a database of local residents who have registered with them. And in that database it has details of their language capabilities. As for the 'quaretr of the world's population' bit most of them do not live in HK, so that's not all that relevant. You could try posting on the local PnS/Wellcome notice board and specify the Mandarin requirement and see how you go.

well, neither does the "Philippines" live here, but they come, and it's a different country... Thank you. Would still appreciate some stories of those who have hired Mandarin-speaking help and how they did it.

kooni, i have friends who employed mainland helpers but they are here as visitor visa, thus they have to go back every few month to maybe shenzhen and re-enter again. it's not legal but it's the only way to get mandarin speaking helpers, i think.

kooni, personally (I am from the mainland), I think the mainland Chinese generally have this "thing" about being a maid. Unlike the Filippinos for example where most of them are here willingly accepting the fact that they are maids and this is what they do.
For the ones from mainland with HKIDs, most of them are from the south and they have a terrible accent when speaking mandarin. Most of them are here because they married locals and most of these are not well educated. So I think that partly explains why you have a hard time find them here.
Secondly, can you imagin if HK allowed mainland maids to come to HK? Their work ethics suck so bad. I'd rather forgo the mandarin learning than employing a mainland maid...

Somone above mentioned the countries that are and aren't included in the FDH scheme. The mainland is not included. There are some Filipinos who DO speak Mandarin just as there are many who speak Korean, Japanese and other languages. So to hire a Mandarin-speaking helper (local or otherwise) you'll need to advertise specifically for one. Of course, you can always go down the illegal route by hiring a mainlander who is here on a visitor's visa, but that's not to be recommended.

I have a friend who tried to hire a helper through the bureau but apparently she was awful and had a major attitude problem, would tell my friend how to bring up her children and that she should be cooking herself, also refused to dust on the top of shelves, etc. She was quickly gotten rid of! And they also command higher salaries, I believe in the range of $10K per month.
