Not once they have started working for you under the standard contract. I mentioned that proviso only because often an employer will give a prospective new helper a trial (paid) for a day. Even that is technically illegal but the Immigration Dept seems to allow it (if they become aware of it, that is) in the name of common sense. I'm also aware of some agencies providing some sort of replacement guarantee if a helper sourced through them does not work out within a set period, but I don't know the details.

It is my understanding that there is a standard period by law that excludes payment of stat holidays during the first three months of a contract. Is this true?

You are not obliged too pay them for a public holiday in the first 3 months but I believe most people do as it is such a small amount. It’s your call though
