Hi Mrs Miggins - The Matilda run courses for helpers on babycare and first aid. Would also recommend that you go on a first aid course if you haven't already - really useful info.

Mrs. Miggins - Have you found western cooking classes for your DH? I checked out all of these links, but haven't quite found the right spot.

Try some of the really good Women's weekly cookbooks from Austalia, they are available in Dymocks and Bookazine. They have a picture for every recipe and clear easy instructions. They have all different titles including one called Basic food, food for babies and toddlers etc. There are large A4 size ones and smaller pocket versions and they are quite affordable. The recepies are easy and straightforward with no weird equipment or ingredents. I have been over many of the cooking courses in HK and they are really for people who already know how to cook, none for complete beginners to the western style of cooking. Our helper is a fantastic cook as she is a trained hospitality teacher but she was not enthused with some cooking classes I thought I would send her to for something to do during last summer as they were not hands on - just watching someone else cook, you may as well turn on the telly and watch Nigella or Jamie Oliver. I think we do need someone to run a course here specifically for helper that goes over 1. Basic food hygiene (cleaning and fridge management) and what temperatures stuff needs to be cooked to, cross contamination etc and 2. Basic cooking techniques, eg, what does does, boil, simmer, dice, etc mean. As well as some of the more tricky western recepies like making white sauce as well as what to subsitute if you don't have an ingredient available. I think if you took it slowly and asked her to learn 10 of your favourite recepies one at a time you will soon see if she is capable of a. learning to cook or having some flair for cooking. Possibly the reason that we don't have courses for beginners here is that they would be quite expensive and so there is no market for it and it takes too long as cooking is time consuming. The only way you really learn is by actually cooking and adjusting what you do by taking notice of the results and adjusting what you do accordingly.

Ness - Definitely agree on the topics that would be beneficial to have offered in a class. I'll check out the books; sound good. I showed my helper a really quick pasta recipe and she was amazed at how simple it can be. I'm sure many of these dh's can pick it up easily...it seems less complicated that much of the Asian food (Chinese, even cuisine from the Philipines) they excel at.

If you are looking for a cook who teaches maids how to cook – I have found your solution!
My maid can now prepare a Jamie Oliver style fish pies... or Thai currys for me. My husband and I have it waiting for us when we get home from work.
Basically your maid needs to know her way around the kitchen and needs to understand English. Other then that she just needs to concentrate.
Sarah teaches her any of your favourite dishes or she will present a portfolio of dishes for you to select from and she can teach your maid how to cook it.
If your maid needs to have the basic training like buying good vegetables and meat then she can do that as well – Sarah works in your home with your maid while you are at work – so the maid knows her way around her/your kitchen!
Very trustworthy – and friendly def recommended at a price but worth it. Very simple solution.
If you want quality dishes – home cooked with good ingredients – particularly pies or curry’s that you can re heat for the next couple of days then def call Sarah her no. is... 94465281

I am wondering how much Sarah charges for training? Do you know how much she charges per hour or per session?
