OK, just to make it clear to myself, helpers are supposed to get 4 days off right? 3 holidays and one in lieu?? Also how much are you giving them in red envelope?

29 January - Sunday
30th Jan - Monday
31st Jan - Tuesday
And if there day off falls on the Sunday an extra day off. So 4 days in total. Exactly what you said. Red envelope depends on the individual??? I am new to all of this as well..... Suggestions???

We don't give a red packet to our helper, she is catholic so it isn't one of her festivals, and it isn't one of ours. But just in case you think we sound mean, we do buy her birthday and christmas presents, and I brought her a ticket to the theatre a couple of weeks ago which she really loved. My husband doesn't get a red packet from his boss.

Last year we gave 1000 to our helper (and 3000 at Christmas)but she hadn't been with us very long. I think it just depends on what you gave at Christmas, and of course your relationship and your own financial situation. We have heard that it is common to give a month's salary("thirteenth month") as either Xmas cash or Laisee or split between the two, which is essentially what we are doing this year. For the guards, we gave 100/each.

P.S. We don't get bonuses or laisee ourselves, and of course our helper is Christian, but this is nonetheless a nice little gift to be able to give to others, and it gives some incentive to continue to do excellent work. We prefer to give a salary in the medium range (between 4000-5000) and then supplement it with bonuses, gifts and flights home. This was advice we were given, and it seems to work.
