im curios about a bizzare event that someone told me about.....
she is working part time for a family.. the wife is a "stay at home mom" and she have a 1yr old kid..
the scenario is "mom" went out to meet someone, leaving the PT help in the house with the sleeping baby.
nothing unusual about that except for the front door WHICH CAN ONLY BE OPENED BY KEY FROM THE INSIDE AND OUT and that she wasnt given a key to the front door.. the PT told the "mom" that she is concerned because incase of an emergency the PT can not move to safety with child as the door is locked and that she wasnt asking fo a personal key to take with her when she leaves but just a key in the house to use if she needs to go out if a fire ir somehting that would require her to leave the premises.. that the baby and the babysitter in high risk in case something does happen..
the "mom's" response was:
"i am not comfortable with my front being open.and it very unlikely that the"accident" will happen at the exact time im away. and if you push it its best that you look for another job."
she put her own child's safety at risk and not to mention that its against the law to lock the only fire exit of the house..
any thoughts on this one??? do think its reasonable to leave the babysitter without access to the ONLY exit in the house?????

Assuming the story is accurate it is completely ridiculous, the helper should tell the mother to stick the job and the exact reason why.
She and the child should not be put in such a situation it is the actions of a mad person to risk two peoples lives based on not wanting to provide a key for work hours. The same person would then blame the helper if something terrible was to happen.

You know when you read stories like that it really makes you think about the absolute stupidity of some people. Assuming that the details of the story are 100% true then I’m afraid that the employer in this case is nothing short of completely irresponsible and does not deserve to employ a DH let alone have an infant in her care.
Some may feel I’m being a little harsh in my condemnation of the employer etc, and that the risk of anything happening to the helper or the child is very small, but surely it's basic common sense not to lock the only door to the only escape route in a building.
Ok, the chances of something happening at that exact time are probably slim but nevertheless the risk still exists. Therefore this incident leaves me thinking 'what kind of women takes a risk like that, however small, with her own child’s life and that of her poor helper????'
I mean its not just the risk of fire, the toddler could start to choke on something, or require medical attention, the helper could smell gas or any number of reasons why she would need to exit the apartment in a hurry. But to Lock two people in a building with no escape route is just plain stupid!!!
My advise to the helper is to look for another employer, and report the present employer to the Authorities as well. I’m no lawyer but I think what she did makes her guilty of detaining a person against her will/consent and also a case of negligent parenting?
Anybody else out there feels the similar way???

i think the PT was telling the truth she was in a real fit yesterday about the whole thing.. and for the employer to dismiss the whole incident and think nothing of it, is plain stupid.
i mean if she doesnt trust the helper she could have locked evrerything in her bedroom and left the front door open, im sure the helper herself knows she is not to allow people in the house without double checking first...

If she doesn't trust the helper to be left with a key to the door, then why the hell would she be trusting the helper to be left with her child!? The mind boggles! Some people need to get their priorities right. I say the helper needs to look for a new employer!

Not surprised at all. I had neighbours (before we moved to Clearwater Bay).... that did the same thing. The helper (a masters degree in education), Filipina.... was at home with their kid, about 2 years old.... and a labrador (huge) .... she is NOT allowed to leave the house at all until the two adults (employers) come home from work, or the mother in law who lives in the next building comes over.
My helper was shocked when their helper told her that she is actually locked from the outside by them when they leave for work. They said, in case of emergency, call them.
I recall one time, the helper kept pounding their front door (from the inside)... we heard it, went outside, screamed to her "WHAT's WRONG? ".... she said, the child locked himself in the bedroom, she cannot get him to open up. She cannot reach the parents..... told me to get the security guy downstairs to run next building to get the mother in law's helper to get the key or something.
It was completely ridiculous. At the end , the kid was fine, but they screamed at the helper for NOT watching the kid, allowing him to lock himself.....
We moved a few months after that.... because they put a gate between our door and theirs.... it was the ugliest thing you ever see.... my guests always stare at the gate next to our door..... and wonder why anyone would do such a thing. (Sorry, off topic)... LOTS of weird people ! I even tried talking to them that they locking the helper inside the house is actually very dangerous. They told me to MIND MY OWN BUSINESS. I told them, I actually was ! Your helper was screaming so loud, it became our whole family's business......geez!

that same employer is now looking for a new helper.. my friend saw her ad.. thing is she used to ask my friend if she would like to stay over nite on a weekend..i mean what if they went out one nite and left helper and kid in the house for the evening and something like a fire would happen.
i was so glad when the helper had a row with the p*ss taking employer. she had since left that woman.. but we both cant help but feel sorry for next helper she would hire.
it do that woman good if she can read this thread.. she doesnt believe that leaving her kid in the house with out means of escape as being ridiculous and not to mention negligent.

perhaps print it off and send the link to her address so she can see what people think

oh, she only pays the helper 2000/mo. the helper works 5days/week 12nn-6pm each time. bring the helper out with her when she goes shopping and gets annoyed when the helper cant finish her work an asks the helper to stay after the agreed hours.

i dont think we can do anything about it... most of the time the authorities would just ignore it anyway.. its major exploitation if you ask me.. it would be best if some one would tho.. my friend doesnt want to stir up trouble.. of corz she can easily deny everything etc..

And remember that part-time work is not allowed on a FDH contract.
I know plenty of people who won't let their helper leave the house because they don't trust her enough, and yet they somehow can trust her enough to leave their children with her at home. Mad, mad, mad. If I entrust something as important as my children to my helper I would never dream of telling her not to take them out, let alone do something as horrific as locking her/them into the house. The behaviour of some employers is truly diabolical (not just employers of helpers, mind, I've heard of some pretty bad stuff in offices) - there is not much basic human goodness around, it seems.
