Helper leaving to get married

ORIGINAL POST

Does anyone have any experience of their helper leaving their employment to get married and live abroad? Ours is planning to marry her american fiance this summer and I wanted to get some idea of how quickly fiancee visas are issued and how we deal with this with immigration (she will have to break her contract).

Thanks for your replies so far. As her fiance is applying for a specific fiancee visa which allows her to enter the US only once and only to marry him I think the process will be fairly straightforward. What I really could do with is an idea of how long it takes to get a visa and whether I can start the processing on a new helper whilst mine is still working for usas I have someone in mind.

In this case, I think you need to look out for yourself and plan on getting a new helper. You should talk to your helper and explain to her that you cannot be left without a helper if her visa were to be processed and approved sooner than expected. Therefore, you are giving her one-, two-, three-? month notice and will start interviewing for a new helper as soon as possible. While your helper will probably have to have an interview at the USA consulate before going over, I don't think her visa would require her to depart from a certain city (i.e., Hong Kong versus Manila).

A French friend of mine is in the process of applying for an American visa - for a one time business trip - and they told him it will take up to two months. After 911, the process has become increasingly difficult.

Thanks All.

Di - did the whole process only take 2 months for your helper and now she has her visa or was it just the US side and now she's doing the legwork over here (if so how long does that take?)? I don't think that my helper's fiance will hire a lawyer as I don't think they have the money, however I could be wrong and have a surprise comming in a few months!

My helper sister just left to USA to marry her fiancee and it took her two months to process all documents. They never hired a lawyer as its her fiancee did all the processing in his side and she do the same thing here in Hongkong.By the way,how do you know that they dont have money to hire a lawyer?

Thx Di. I think the paper work has only just been submitted in the US so I am hoping that it will take at least 3 months from now but it could take longer. I want to keep her as long as possible so will just have to sit it out!

As a follow up to this post:- our helper's visa has been approved in the US and after providing all the necessary document she now has her interview at the consulate arranged. If she is successful does anyone know how quickly the visa will be issued?
