we just hired a helper and wonder if many people keep the dh's passport for safekeeping? what is the practise for this?

Hi! Keeping the DH's passport is illegal. But others do it because they want to lessen the chance of the DH lending money from financial institutions. Once the DH failed to repay the loan on time, these lending institutions will keep on calling your house and may do illegal things to push you and your maid to repay the loan immediately.

If you have the passport in a place where it is accessible for her - or you are able to access it for for her on demand (ie in a safe) and it is a mutually agreed arangement - ie for safe keeping - then there is no problem - however you need to get the agreement in writing and the conditions under which it is being kept with her signing the agreement.

Illegal. But you could advise her not to use it for getting a loan (or you will fire her.....).
