Hi all, I think I'm interested in finding a Thai helper. It's more of a recommendation by friends, and the recent bad experiences I had with helpers from the Philippines. Maybe just my bad luck, so I want to try a new nationality. Can someone give me some ideas about what Thai helpers are generally like? Do they speak English/Mandarin? We don't speak Cantonese, but Mandarin and English. Is there a big population of them here in Hong Kong? How should I go about finding one? The agency near where I live only has Filipinos and Indonesians.

They are the third-largest community among FDHs in HK. Do they speak English? They speak any language as well as any other foreigner. The chances of getting one who speaks Mandarin would possibly lie with whether the person concerned has worked in Taiwan before - or has had prior experience here with a Mandarin-speaking employer here in HK. There would doubtless be some Thais registered on this site. There's also at least one agency (probably many more than that) in HK that handles Thai helpers, but I don't know their contact details. I'm sure someone will come up with the details for you. Good luck. (And by the way, problems with helpers in HK are not the sole domain of any single nationality.)

My helper is a Thai. I should say tht she is the best helper that I have ever had (rating frm honesty/integrity to practicality). No...I am not new to maid stuffs...I grew up with the helps of nannies/maids. She speaks Thai ONLY but it's her first time in HK. Learned frm her that most her thai friends here can speak very well cantonese and English, not mandarin. She is now learn few words of english frm my daugther. Di agree with the general saying that Thai is not great with Baby though... Toddler should be fine.

Hi! Jingaling, try to call Mary (my sister's agent and my friend) at 6283 7299. I know her agency has maids from Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. Give her a call, she might be able to help you. Good Luck!

I work with two Thais. They cannot read nor write the English language. One can speak little of it, hardly conversational. If you wish to hire one, recommend her to learn cantonese during her dayoff so you can communicate with her. This would mean you take extra effort in translating to them any english instructions they meet as they work with you--as in english recipe books, instructions on garments, receiving bills, letters, etc.

Hi! Jingaling, just met my friend last sunday and she told me her agency got two maids that match your requirements: one speaks cantonese, english and mandarin and the other one speaks mandarin and cantonese. If you're interested, you may call Mary at 6283 7299. Good Luck!
