Where do amah's sleep?

My family and I are looking to move to Hong Kong in August. Less than 6 weeks and we will be there.

We have lived in Singapore where the maids rooms and apartments were spacious and inexpensive respectively. Looking at websites for apartments in Hong Kong I am looking at three bedroom after three bedroom apartments which have no Amah quarters.

There also seems to be very few 4 bedroom places..at least in my lowly teacher's salary range.

We have three children. Would most people in these circunstances give the amah their own bedroom? Am thinking aloud here that three kids 15,13 and 6 in one room does not sound like fun!

Thanks for your help.

That is a good point actually. Maybe it is different in Singapore where everyone had heaps of space. Perhaps we could just look for a local cleaning company if we needed help in that regard. Thanks for replying HK1

To be honest most people's living space in HK is tiny so even if the kids could share a room it would be tough to find a place with big enough rooms to accommodate them. often the second and third bedrooms here are little more than cupboards in size so if you can do without a helper it may be the way to go.

The reality is that amah/helpers sleep wherever there is space for them. In some homes, they may have a regular bedroom with air-con, phone and TV; they may sleep in a small room attached to the kitchen which just has room for a small single or bunk bed and may or may not have an attached bathroom which may or may not be used as a store room. They may share a room with one of the children. They may share a bed with one of the children. They may sleep in the kitchen or the living room. Every situation is different.

What part of HK are you looking in?

We are looking in Discovery Bay/ Tung Chung. We will both be working eventually and will have a dog so we are quite eager to have help. I guess we could always see what the other amahs do when we get our apartment.

Many thanks moppet and aemom.

You can also apply for your foreign domestic helper to live out if the apartment has very limited space. It is possible to do and does not cost more to apply for this exemption but of course you will have to foot the cost of the amah's living quarters at the boarding house which may not be feasible if you are on a very tight budget. We are going to Singapore with our three kids and the maids room is bigger than any of the bedrooms including the master that we have here. On the flip side she is paid four times more here than a maid in Singpore and has lots more holidays.

You might want to post an enquiry on the Property Chat forum or do some research on it about DB and Tung Chung.

I'm intrigued by how you can afford schooling for three kids on a 'lowly teacher's salary'. Perhaps they'll be at your international school for free. If not, maybe have a look at the Moms & Dads' forum about schools.

Can you tell me how you apply for the exemption? I am very interested in applying for one as I would prefer a live out maid.

Thanks

Hi Scottsue, I know of a stay-out Amah that can live in Caribbean Coast Phase 2. She's very good and can be trusted. This will be perfect for you since she lives just there and you don't have to pay for her apt or transportation. But even if you don't stay in CCoast but near CCoast, the transportation allowance will be very minimal. Please PM me if you're interested.
