I'm looking to bring my mother in law back to HK.She has worked as a DH for a chinese couple for around 20 years, unfortunately she had to return to the Phils for personal reasons. Now I would like to sign her as my wife(her daughter) is expecting our second child in October. Is it best not to admit she is family to immigration,I have heard this can complicate things, and also what is the minimum salary I as employer has to earn to sign a contract. Also should she come to HK first as tourist or wait in Phils while I process from this end, should I go through an agency.Your helpful comment welcomed.

If you are proposing to hire your MIL as a DH and she is in the Philippines, then you will need to go through an agency.
We have just tried to hire my existing helper's daugther (in the Philippines) as our second helper. The Philippines Consulate wouldn't notarise the employment contract because the Phil Consulate expressly requires that "if you hire a DH direct from abroad, you have to go through an agency". It costs about HK$ 3,500 (includes HK immigration visa fee, Phil Consul processing fee + other Phil Consul fees for direct hires from abroad, plus medical examination fee, plus airfare from Phil to HK). Of note, if the application is rejected by HK Immigration, then the agencies only refund you a small amount ie $300.

sad is right.....there is an age limit, besides she is your wife's mother which makes it hard for you to get her a DH visa, so better yet check it out if you can take her here in a dependant visa(depends on what you earn), if your wife is working too then I dont think there is a problem for both of you to take her here in a dependants visa. If you pass by immigration, you can take those booklets in the 2/F where you can find all the information you need, they are very helpful, at least you know that the right answer to your questions are there.Thats what I always do when I got question about immigration issues...or check their website and email them, they are very helpful in giving informations.
I hope this helps.

Sydexpat - things obviously may have changed but we employed our helper "DH direct from abroad" last year without using an agency.

better yet not to use an agency if you have time to process the papers all by yourself....in that case you can save money and the helper also saves money.

most of the times....after you hired the helper from the agency..the agency wont give you anymore attention.....if you fire your helper and that helper goes to that agency for help she need to pay again....thats how agencies works...they are working for money not for help...
