Steps to take with Immigration

I have recently found a helper who we will be employing in the near future. I have never been through the process of employing full-time help and I wondered if anyone could tell me a step by step guide to where I need to go, what I need to do and in what order. I would be grateful for any information to avoid turning up with the wrong paperwork or in the wrong order as seems to be the case whenever I try to renew my own visa!!!! The helper we are going to employ is currently working in HK, her contact is being terminated prematurely as her present employers are being repatriated. Thanks for any help.

I've just been through this process exactly. Am writing you a very comprehensive list of what I have done, but don't want to post it here in case people rely on it and I have got it wrong!! Will send it by PM. If anyone else is interested in how to do a direct hire of a terminated helper, let me know and I will send it to you too - with all care and NO responsibility!!!

I would very much like to see your notes as well. We are moving to HK mid feb and are looking now at hiring a maid already there.

Sent you a PM familyhale - please remember, just my experiences so all care and no responsibility. They're pretty comprehensive, I got carried away! My notes are in reference to a maid whose contract has been terminated early.

Miffy I would appreciate if you could forward me through the detailed sheet you have regarding employing a helper as I am also about to go through the process. Thanks in advance.

Miffy - can you please forward me your notes as well? I'm totally clueless and keep getting a different story from each agent I speak to.

Many thanks.

Bay326 and magpies - I am really reluctant to send you the notes (which relate specifically to hiring a terminated helper), as I am having such a debacle trying to get my helper here after the new laws in the Philippines. My best advice to you would be to hire a helper whose contract has NOT been terminated, but has expired, or has been terminated because the employer left HK permanently, or died. If the helper doesn't need to go back to the Philippines to get her visa processed right now, at least when she returns later the whole mess will hopefully be sorted out and it will be a simple procedure.

Right now, it is really a lot of trouble. The HK Immig side of things is easy!

Hello,

A small schedule.

After her ternination, she has dissmissed. It took us 2 weeks to do all the papers, go to consulate after immigration, again consulate....

After she left HK and I went to immigration to make start the process.

We wait during 6 weeks to get the visa.

After it took again 2 weeks for new rules in philippines (they must have their visa to start the exam).

So it took us 10 weeks after the day we had chosen her.

Hi Miffy,

I'm going to hire a helper who's current employer has to let her go prematurely. I would like to see the list that you have for dealing with Immigration. Her current employer told me that the helper doesn't even have to leave the country and that it only takes 2 weeks to process the transition. This seems too good to be true!

Thanks for the help,

jenny
