Hi Di,

It seems a bit much when you have to order so much extra water for her. Maybe, you should tell her to drink boiled tap water as she obviously needs so much, or tell her to start paying for the extra bottle herself, as it is for her use.

We all have to get extra stuff when our DH's live with us, but it should not be overdone at our expense.

As for the ' normal medical advise'...2-3 litres is good...so let her drink boiled tap water. GP's would say...' nothing wrong with that!'.

c'mmon guys its only a water,we could afford to buy expensive stuff - I wont mind if my helper consume lots of our water as long as she drink it.No bother at all.

Its only water.Maybe you need to add the ordered

water. Winter is coming so I am sure she will not have that much consumption in comparison of last season. Employers need to provide food and drink to the helper unless she is given a monthly food allowance.I salute Miming way of thinking and also FOTH.

Why not buy an excellent water purifier? (about $1,000) Then using the Watsons water bottles and dispenser you have nice clean cold water at a fraction of the cost and no one will go without water and she can drink as much as she likes- it would be the DH job to ensure there is enough water in the bottle at all time for everybody.

I would initially check very politely that she is not using the water to perhaps do things like fill the kettle or boil vegetables or pasta which she may be under the impression you would want. Other than that she is probably at home all day/night and working doing quite physically demanding work in a hot environment of stoves, ovens, dryers and irons and needs to drink more than someone sitting like me in the aircon in the office idling away my time at the computer.

We put no restriction on our helpers intake of food or water - there is no one household two sytems when it comes to these things except in the case of alcohol.

since watson's water is inexpensive and delivered right to your home, why don't you order more? explain to your helper that it is her responsibility to inform you when water supplies are running low, so that you can reorder it and therefore, no one is going thirsty.

we follow the same policy as ness in our home.

tell her not to fill up her water bottles with your water. If she needs to fill up water bottles she can buy. If she is in the house and needs to drink, then use a glass.. or a cup.. or whatever utensil she is allowed to use in your house.

what a petty thing to be arguing about.

Do you want her to get sick drinking tap water? She is then your responsability until she gets better.

Just ask her to please refrain from filling her hot water bottle with drinking water.

Hi Di,

I don't understand why some people have to critcise you for this, you were only asking for suggestions and making a very reasonable point. You didn't sound as if you were trying to restrict her at all, so why do they have to jump at you like that.

Think about it, in the real world we don't usually get to eat/drink and do the the same things like our boss', isn't it?

I personally do not see anything wrong with drinking boiled tap water, I've been drinking it ever since I came to HK, so there shouldn't be a problem in asking her to be more considerate or use the tap water instead.

Is there something wrong with drinking tap water here?

Evandie - most offices do not have one water bottle for the boss and another inferior bottle for the staff. everybody drinks the same water and as much of it as they like. though I agree that filling your personal water bottle out of it is damn cheeky.

Why? can't she boil water to drink. We use to drink Watson's water at home but when this happen we stop drinking it so our domestic helpers has to drink boiled water. If she like to drink distilled water she can buy her own. Boiled water is as healthy.

We (me, my partner, dog, cats, fish, helper) drink direct from the tap, have done so for 10 of the 12 years (and 5 different buildings/districts) since I have lived here. The only thing in the water of a reasonably maintained building that you may want to filter out is the chlorine, which will evaporate if left to stand for a few hours. We used to filter it but then I learned how much BS those filter claims are, and how much profit is in them.

I can tell the difference between filtered water in HK just by drinking it. My house is about 35 years old - so the crap in the pipes is nasty - when we change the filter it is nasty what is trapped in there - one of our filters burst much earlier than it should have been filled up because of the crap that was trapped in there.

I do believe they help to clean the water - the taste diference is quite apparent. Non filtered water in HK tastes like dirt - from any tap, not just my own.

I do not like to drink straight from the tap at all not just becasue of the taste but also the unknowns that have been dumped in the water further upstream...

If your water quality is substandard it is due to the poor maintenance of your building supply. My own development (Park Island) has won awards for its significantly high standard of on-site water quality and supply maintenance. Direct from the scientific and systematic testing of the government (Water Authority Homepage http://www.wsd.gov.hk/en/text/water/drinkwater.htm):

Hong Kong enjoys one of the safest water supplies in the world. The quality of the water conforms both chemically and bacteriologically to the Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality recommended by the World Health Organization. Water Supplies Department is committed to supply the public with water that is clear, odourless, wholesome and free from pathogenic bacteria.

Water quality throughout the entire treatment, supply and distribution system is systematically monitored by means of chemical, bacteriological and biological examinations of water samples taken at catchment intakes, pumping stations receiving Guangdong water, storage reservoirs, treatment works, service reservoirs, distribution systems and consumers' taps.

With proper treatment and stringent quality monitoring and control, Hong Kong is assured of a safe and wholesome water supply which meets international standards…

…Although the quality of water supplied to the consumers is strictly controlled and monitored, the quality of water drawn from consumers' taps may sometimes be affected by the condition of the inside plumbing…

Oh - I know the inside plumbing is nasty - so I filter my water, and it works. I don't think it is a waste of money.
