Dental Work for my DH

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by hkwatcher 17 yrs ago
How much am I obligated to pay for dental work under the terms of my contract? I know the Labor Laws say I am liable for emergency work, but what if there are multiple follow ups to that? The Labor Laws are not clear, is it up to what the Insurance would normally cover?

Are there some legalities involved here or is it up to my conscious?

Talking about at root canals, crowns etc.

Thanks

Our insurance does not cover dental works, and I think it applies to all insurance being sold to Domestic Helpers' employers.

We either go and see a private dentist and grit the charges ( $250-500/ tooth extraction) or wait until we are back in the Philippines to have our teeth done. However, you may send your helpers to :

Prince Philip Dental Hospital

34 Hospital Road,

Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong

Tel : 2859 0238

Fax : 2517 4179

E-mail : go@ppdh.org.hk

She needs to be there early to reach the day's quota and has to pay the HK$45. Then they will check what they could do for you. I have had a root canal and a tooth removed with no extra charge. Except that I have to grip the side of the dental chair to the point that I broke some of my nails. ( too painful! I think they -- students-try to do as much as they could so pleasantries asdie from the basic is out of the question). The cons of it for employers is that they only do it during weekdays.

It would be nice if you give your helper some money for a cab fare and let her have the rest of the day off. Again you do not have to, this is just " a littl something " that will be deeply appreciated.

BTW, here's their rates:

My insurance for my DH includes Dental. Why would an employer chose an insurance that did not? I chose an insurance plan that covered everything required under the law - medical, dental, repatriation (if deceased), it even includes an amount if the helper steals or makes IDD phonecalls without permission.

Puti,

Can you tell me what insurance that you use for your helper and the monthly payment?

Dear Puti,

Read your policy. I have the same as you do.

It covers 2/3 of actual expenses for emergency dental work by a Registered Dentist except for:

oral examination

polishing and cleaning

crown, bridges or dentures

dental prosthetics up to a maximum of $1500 per year.

Don't assume my insurance is inadequate. Dental care is very expensive. If you reread my question, I asked what am I expected by law BEYOND my insurance.

BTW, it is Prudential called PRUchoiceMaid

Hi hkwatcher - sorry, rereading it, my message did seem abrupt. I have many friends who have not actually bothered with insurance. I do know my helper is pleased with hers, as she has passed on the details to other helper/employers. I did pay extra for our insurance, as I know teeth were a medical issue when we did that. I went through the policy with the agency (this is an agency that only charges the employer) and made sure it covered everything under the law (this is over a year ago, so I can't give specifics). I then gave the card and all the info I could to the helper and we have had no medical conversations since. She had RSI of the wrist and multiple doctor vists with this and a little physio, also her teeth were fitted with braces and required a lot of work before she could come over and she has been to the dentist here a couple of times and I have paid no extra.

I must add - she is an exceptional helper and managed all this with no disruption to the family.

Mita5chome - have sent you a private message - and are you trying to say you have 5 children at home! well done!
