DH going to Canada - how to inform IMD?

(Sorry if this is a repeat question....)

My DH has resigned and will go to Canada.

1) In my termination notification letter, do I write that she is going to Canada? I dont want to ruin any chances of her working in HK again if she chooses to do so by writing the wrong thing, or giving too much information.

If I dont write she is going to Canada, what do I write?

2) Can my DH and I both sign the same notification letter and fax that one letter to the IMD? Or do we have to write 2 letters?

3) Do we have to write a formal resignation letter from DH to myself as well, and provide it to the IMD?

4) Finally, in addtion to stating that I have provided the equivalent to a return airline ticket to the Philippines, are there any other obligations I need to fulfill?

Thanks for the advice.

MumBee,

I would have thought that if she is resigning she should be the one to write the letter of resignation and you can either sign that or write a brief note acknowledging and accepting the resignation.

I do not see why she would need to explain her precise reason in the letter something vague like leaving HK for personal reasons should suffice. You certainly do not need to explain why she is resigning.

From Immigration point of view the "leaving HK" is the key point. They do not really need to know what she is doing once she is no longer a resident here.

You should type out a list of payments -

annual leave outstanding, salary up until last day and airline ticket and have her sign receipt of these items.

Send to Immigration -

1. Resignation letter from helper

2. Acknowledgement of resignation /( could be signature on bottom of 1.)

3. Itemised list of payments made signed by both parties.

If your helper is going to Canada, she is unlikely to want the one-way airticket home. Our first helper recently left us to go to Canada and in lieu of the ticket, we gave her money instead (HK$1500) which she appreciated.

Btw, our helper cited "employment opportunity in Canada" as her reason for resigning.

You can find samples of letters for termination/resignation and sample letter for receipts of payments on termination in Appendix 4 and 5 of the FDH guide:
