Helpless helper....

Hi Andalucia, you sound really stressed out and quite clearly unhappy with your DH. Considering she doesn't have much to do around the house, I would terminate her and hire part time help before you leave. You can always hire a babysitter (rent a mum) if you need time to yourself.

I have two children and very much like you, do all the cooking and looking after my children myself. I am now so stress free and happier since firing my DH. I have a part time helper (local) that comes 3 times a week and is so much more helpful than my full time helper ever was!

If you think about it, you are paying her to do a job, if she is not doing it right then you are wasting your money. I'm sure you would get the sack from your employment if you were lazy and not doing your job properly.

It really depends if you can put up with your helper until Dec, if not, fire her.

You can let your DH go even though she may not have done anything terrible. Just tell her and immigration that she is no longer needed because you will be leaving HK soon which is legitimate cause for letting her go. Also, you may feel that you'' be helpless without DH but I think it's all about getting acustomed to the pattern. I have 2 kids and my DH is gone to her home right now for her 2 weeks holiday. The first week she was gone, I was running around crazy all day. Even my doorman mentioned I look very flustered. But by 2nd week, I have things under control and I'm doing okay. I actually enjoy being home alone during the day without another person at home and feel that I can do without DH. I almost wish she doee not come back.

Sit her down, ask her if she really wants this job. If she says no, then give her a month's notice, or give her a month's salary and ask her to go immediately. If she says yes, then explain what is wrong (basically her not cleaning properly - I wouldn't bother too much with other stuff as you're going anyway, but it would be nice to have a clean house before you move). Go around the house with a camera and take photos of everything that needs to be cleaned, stick the photos on a piece of paper with cleaning instructions next to them. Give her two weeks to have the house spotless (and tell her it is to stay that way) or she will be terminated. Easy.

(Oh, third option - she cries and tells you about her bad back or sick mother. Ignore this and repeat initial question. )

She obviously wants the money but not the job. You do not need the stress of a lazy domestic helper. She also lied about the cleaning.

Just terminate her.

dont go soft on her just because she put on a pathetic front and telling you how poor she is blah blah blah. she has no one but herself to blame for losing the job because obviously she doesn't know how to treasure the opportunity she has with you. fire her, and dont even keep her for a month, just give her one month pay and ask her to go. i know it may sound cruel but i seriously think that she will never change. just do it!

Just get rid of her NOW, you'll feel so relieved ! You can easily find someone else to help you, full time or part-time.

And please don't give her a recommendation letter, it will prevent other people from getting in trouble ;-)

Yes, you should terminate your helper if things are not working out. However, it will not be so "easy" to find good FT help if you explain that you are leaving in December. PT help would be a better solution.
