Cable TV for Helper.

I have just arrived in HK and have hired a helper. Is it common practise to provide cable tv access for the helper?

No it is not common practise, the monthly charge is quite expensive (in my opinion) and as far as I know the companies do not provide two for price of one in any household.

cable tv, mobile phone, computer, dvd player and tv are perks ... be careful in providing them freely and often to your helper as there are some helpers who abuse the generosity of their employers.

As mentioned it is not common practice.


I would say wait 3-6 months or so and see if she works out. If she is doing well, give her a perk like this and make sure she knows it is because you are happy with her performance. In other words, make her earn the perk first.


BTW another thing you can do after 3 months is give her a raise.

perks are nice thing... however as i said be careful of giving her big expensive perks specially during the early days of her employment with you.


there are so many little perks that would make anyone happy and these tokens of appreciation like a small bottle of lotion or including her when you order in for pizza will be well received.

Wiz Bang is absolutely right. There are so many possible perks that mean less commitment than cable TV:

- Getting her some nice furnishings for her room.

- Sending her to a training class, like cooking or first aid.

- Giving non statutory days off.

- Giving her discarded items from the household to send home (and paying for the "big honking box")

- Giving her your magazines once you are done.

- Letting her borrow your books.

- Etc...
