Helper lost mobile phone

Hello,

I've hired a new helper in May and she's been GREAT since then.

About a month ago, I bought her a mobile phone because I want to be able to get hold of her when she's out with my toddler.

I bought her a new phone (500HKD).

Yesterday she lost it.... I believe she's telling the truth. She's very upset with this.

Would you withdraw 500HKD from her salary ?

She didn't ask for the mobile phone, I was the one who gave it to her for security reasons. Of course, I know she was very happy about it...

Also, would you get her a new phone now ? I'm hesitating but at the same time, I really need to be able to get hold of her....

Don't know what to do.....

Advices are welcome !

To be honest, suspicion of her re-sold your mobile phone did come up to my mind! Did she explain how did she lose it? Why do you have to buy her a phone? Does she have hers? If she does have hers and you bought her another, no wonder she lost it as she has to LOOK AFTER two phone and your child at the same time. I can imagine how clumsy it wld be if both the phones rang at the same time and your little one cried as well! So assuming that she has her own phone and you dont want to use her minutes, wl it be better for you just to get her a prepaid telephone card. Tell her to use your card when she is out with children. If she does NOT have a phone yet, then I dont think you hve any choice if you want to keep in touch with her while she is out, get her a new one and explain to her that is your property and she should take good care of it. If she lost it again, then you shld start to think what the truth wl be..... Good luck.

Mighty, she doesn't have her own mobile phone, that's the reason why I got her one. I don't think she would sell it and lie to me.... but of course I'm not sure of that !

Just now I don't know what to think and what to do !!!

I am a clutz who always loses mobile phones.. and (hopefully) it isn't a reflection on my other skills!!

I'd buy her another one, but explain that if she loses this one - she'll have to pay 1/2 of the next replacement phone.....

Ladyfrog, is she a newbie to Hongkong? Coz I have never seen a helper (especially filipinos) without a phone. My helper (though she told me that she has sent all her money back to her home country) has got the newest model mobile phone, one blueberry while her old phone is still very usable (my husband borrowed her old phone once when he forgot to charge his). So to be honest, I really dont know how she can manage to have so many phones. I think you have no choice if you want to get hold of her. We dont have many public phones now, so it is really a pain if you dont have a mobile phone. Get her one and as CCCMN said, if she lost it again, she has to contribute something to it.

Hi Ladyfrog,

We too have given our helper a mobile phone with a SIM card, of course.

Luckily our DH has it till now.

I would tell her next time she loses it, she pays for it entirely to replace it, as she has been let off this time.

wake up fellas.....you should have insurance for your helper. this should cover loss of your property....why no one thinks here?

secondly YOU bought her a phone for YOUR comfort to be able to reach her so its a work tool now.

so you buy her a new phone......claim insurance, and then warn her to not loose it again, or she has to pay part herself!

My experience is that most insurance doesn't cover phones - if so, there's a $500 or so excess. ChefinHK, be nice.

Our helpers insurance does not cover a phone - and it would be worth claiming on our insurance because of the excess.

I think the idea of getting a new phone and telling her if she were to lose it she would have to pay half is probably the best way to go.
