I employed a maid 2 months ago directly from her home country just interviewing thru the phone. She has turned out to be reasonably good. Last week we went away on a short break and my dad was in town, when we got back he told me that HK200 was missing from his wallet 100 dollars at a time. I decided to confront her, not accusing but told her of the finding she didn't flinch but said that she did not take it and did cry a bit. I just want to warn her that I may not notice sometime if small amount of money go missing but when I start to notice than the trust is broken and the contract will be terminated. Can anyone tell me how else would you have handle this situation. Thanks in advance.

Sadly, some helpers don't realize that they would be terminated once an employer discovers loss of money/valuables. You did right that you've told her this. I don't fully trust my helper because she is still relatively new to my home (also 2 months). So, I never leave wallets/jewelry/watches unattended. I've got a safe, so just put all the valuables in the safe each time I/husband come back from work. It was very ANNOYING in the beginning! Now it's a habit. It works for us. I think employers should not leave space for helper's temptation. This is the reality of living with a total stranger.

No way it might have been your father who misplaced his money or used it for something and then forgot? I'm not saying that it's unheard of for helpers to steal, but it's also not unheard of to think you've got more money in your wallet than you've got (I do it all the time!)

You dont accused her but the fact that you are warning her and told her of your fathers missing money,it will also scare your helper.

I think I have given her the benefit of doubt. She has gone on like we never had the conversation. So I've let it go but personally I need her to know that there are repurcusion if it really did happen. If the money came out of my purse I probaby would not have noticed but it was from my dad's wallet and he did because it was money he was paying my bills with. Before we left for our break I left some money for grocery for both of them and she had asked for advance from her salary. We haven't paid her second month salary yet because it isn't the end of the month but I gave her anyway and she get's more than the basic. She has some financial problem back home I feel for her and helped her out the first month she was here but unfourtunately her agent helped herself of that money too. When I asked her about the money I did not accuse her of taking it I said that money was missing and if continues to happen especially since she has been hear it will look suspicios to us and it was 100 each time from the wallet. I've had maids before and never had this problem. So no I don't think they all steal.
