Absent minded helper

My helper goes to the market a few times a week to buy food for us. Either i give her a list or I ask her to write down what to get. The list is very clear, however she often misses 1-2 items out despite she carries the list with her. In the end she has to go back to the market again or I go myself which I think it's a waste of time.

I don't want to make a big fuss about this, it's something petty but it's annoying. I insist everything to be written down at home, things to eat, to do, to buy and so on so there is no excuse for forgetting things. However she still forgets. What should I do?

You seem to have tried the list method. That is, she has a memory aid so as you say there is no valid excuse. It almost sounds like she doesn't care.

I would sit her down and give her a warning. Tell her that if she does not improve you will have to let her go. If there is no improvement, you should terminate her.

Thanks for your replies.

annesuy: Me and my husband also have a feeling that she does it on purpose so she can go out again. If that happens again, we will tell her that she cannot go out again and I will go to the market myself or she goes tomorrow.

I am a part time working mum and I can do all the shopping. The reason I ask my helper to go to the market is that she can get out of the house for some fresh air, get her own food, phone card or meet a friend in the market, whatever. If she concentrates on her own things and misses things on my shopping list, then I will not let her out for a week so she learns her lesson.

KennyL: If I chain her to the floor, you will see me on the newspaper for abusing my helper. I do not treat my helper as a slave!

The incident happens quite a number of times and the shopping list does not consist more than 5 items. I give her all the time she needs for shopping and even running her own errands. I don't time her. Why should I?? I have other more important things to do.

I post the thread just because I want to hear some solutions from people, not get insulsted. Thanks.

Easy solution. Ask her to call you after she finishes at the market. Then ask her if she's bought everything on the list. If you only have 5 items, then name each item when you're on the phone with her. If you have 15 on the list, then 1-2 missing's no big deal unless you need it that day. But if she does it on purpose, then you have other issues that you need to discuss with her. Eg. Is she happy working with you? Is she handling her job okay? Does she need more break outside of home? Are they heavy stuff? Eg. If you've asked her to get the rice, it would be unfair if she has to bring home a watermelon and tissues boxes as well etc.

Not easy to comment because we don't know what you've asked her to get.
