Need some advice.

Just hired a local part-time helper. She holds a valid HKID card.

Do I need to get workers compensation insurance for her?

Do I need to sign any (if there is any) contract with her?

Can I ask for her HKID # and address for my own registration and protection?

Do I pay her in CASH? Or by CHEQUE? Do I need to sign some note as a receipt?

What else should I need to know prior to her arrival to work? (she is coming to work on Monday ? As this is the FIRST time I hire a local pt/ helper, I would like someone to help me in order to avoid complaint / misunderstanding from both parties.

Thank you for all the help and advice.

Note that Foreign Domestic Helpers also hold HKID cards. The important thing with a part time is that she have permanent residency or citizenship. Just having an HKID does not prove residency.

- I would strongly recommend a contract to protect you and her.

- You can pay in cash or with a cheque, although many prefer cash since they may not have a bank account. She should definitely sign a receipt for the money each time.

- As far as I know, you can make a copy of her HKID and ask for her address.

- Don't know about worker's comp.

Prep is the same as with an FDH. Make a weekly schedule detailing what you need her to do and what you would usually be doing at certain times. Go through it with her. Also make a list of things that need to be done, detailing frequency and priority. Talk to her about communication and tell her not to be afraid of asking questions.

Bad communication is the biggest reason for problems.

axptguy38, Many thanks to your advice.

I will certainly check carefully (her ID card) prior to start.

If you pay her more than a certain amount in a tax year (Apr to Mar) (I think it is 25k but IR website will confirm) then you have to make a submission to IR each April stating exactly what has been paid. It's taxable.

Check the IR website out.
