I gave my helper $300 for her birthday last year, and for xmas a few gifts like smellies, tops etc to the value of $300. We don't give a Chinese New year bonus either, as its not a festival that we or her celebrate. My husband doesn't get a bonus on his birthday or CNY either. And while I think its nice to get her a gift for her birthday I certainly don't feel that I have to spend more on her than I would on my close friends. I occasionally buy her other things, like twice this year I have got her a theatre ticket and she's had a great time there, plus she gets quite a lot of time off.

I usually get a birthday cake, and $ 300. We allow the helper too ALL foods and drinks in the household (except for alcohol)....We already include an extra ticket back to her home each year, she gets money for Christmas, CNY, and birthday. Anything more, it's too much for us to take on.

We gave our helper a $500 DVD player and she was "OVER THE MOON", I can't tell you how excited she was! We usually give money at Christmas and she's always very grateful but it was nice for a change to give her something she would never buy herself (but had always wanted).

We pay our helper over the above award wages and for her birthday and CNY, we give her $100. Having said that, at Christmas she gets presents from the extended family. During the year, I also give her novels that I've read and no longer want to keep.
