Interesting article on the BBC web page about Asian workers and one Indonesian FDH in particular.

Not really interesting, this is normal life for a domestic helper. What it shows though is that people are losing their jobs, not just the expats (as shown in other threads) but also locals.

punter,
Interesting how we may each see things from a different angle. Yes you are right in that it shows that some FDH are getting laid off and suffering hardships but to me it also says that there are people from outside of HK who are willing to give up a job back home to earn more money here as a FDH than they would in their own country doing a 'normal' day job. And it also shows that some do earn enough in 4 years to buy a house back home and at the same time pay for schooling for siblings etc.

Claire Bolderson convenietly overlooks the dark side of the business - Indonesian employment agencies and their practices imposed on young women before they are sent overseas....

Markulka,
And also no mention of their own customs or whoever asking additional fees because they work overseas. But it should be said the woman interviewed had already been to HK and she obviously knew the score but still felt it was worthwhile returning to work as a FDH here.
