Questions on DH

Dear friends,

I have two questions on DH and hope you could help me out:

1. We bought the medical insurance for our DH, but sometimes, the clinic visit expense will exceed the reimbursable amount. Should we pay the extra or the DH should pick it up?

2. We are thinking about taking a one-week vacation outside of Hong Kong. What should our DH do at that time with no body at home? Should she get paid for the whole week? What would be the typical practice?

Many thanks for your help!!

When you're away its a good chance for your helper to do a good spring clean, clean out the cupboards, wash curtains, duvets etc.

Yes, I agree with jbebeb,

I ask my helpers to go to clinics that costs no more than $ 200 a visit (usual colds, flus..infections..).... so I don't have to foot the extras. I don't think it's fair for the DH to pay for it herself.... you are supposed to pay for the medical bills anyways.

2) Since it is YOUR choice to go away for 1 week, I think your DH should still get paid, but ask her to do all the things you have on a list. I think if she's not going home, that's only fair. If your boss needed to go on a holiday, would you be happy to ask you to take a 1 week no pay leave and sit in the office but don't do anything. I just don't think it works saying stay home, the house is all yours, you don't have to do anything, and I am not paying you for this week.....

Should the employers be responsible for all the medical costs? Is it part of the employment ordinance in HK?

The company that I am working for provides health benefits coverage to the employees, but we need to pay out of our own pocket if the actual expense is more than the max coverage. Shouldn't it be the same case for the helpers? Just curious...

1) Yes, you have to pay it all, but also you may specify which doctor she is to see. If she wants to go to a different doctor then you can ask her to pay. I tell my DH she can go to the local doctor I see (who is within the insurance limits per consultation) or she can go to the govt hopital outpatient dept.

2) Yes, of course you have to pay her (unless you offer her unpaid leave and she accepts) - same as if your boss went away. One word of warning - if you go away for a week and just ask her to do some deep cleaning, then write down exactly what you expect her to do, or you will be disappointed when you come home. If you just ask her to keep the place clean and tidy then that is all she will do, probably.
