Given that HK's apartment is not very big, do i need to provide a room for them? Where should i let them sleep, put their belongings? What is th e working hours? Is it reasonable to have them do other things other than cooking, household chores, looking after kids?

I was told when I hired a helper by a Immigration person when i told them i wanted a live out (years ago) he asked - "why do you need live out? you have such a big house?" (2100sqft) "yes but i have 4 teenagers and it is only a 4 bedroom house with no amah quarters - we do not have space for another body in the house" - "she can have a mattress on the floor of the living room at night" was his reply and solution to my dilemma- she ended up living out without immigration knowing - it was too hard to do it legally.

Thanks. Dimac4, is it illegal for her to sleep in the living room? Did you need to pay for her living out.

Not illegal for her to sleep in the living room - I forgot to mention that he also suggested a curtain to give her some privacy....did he ask If I had space for another mattress and that I wanted her to sleep in the living room and that I wanted a curtain in the living?? Different living standards I suppose.
Yes I had to pay more for her to live out - the rent $1300/m, plus gas water and electricity for the shared house with about 4 other DH's. (some used more than others of course)
On the job front - mine did the gardening as well, and other outside jobs such as cleaning out drains, - I had a policy that if I had to do if they weren't there then i didn't think it was unreasonable to ask them to do it. They are domestic HELPERS.
I no longer have a DH as the extra demands on my time, thought processes and emotions in my mind were not worth having someone else do the stuff I could do. It is a lifestyle change that I didn't enjoy very much. Some people do, but I couldn't. Maybe I picked the wrong ones.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply.Did you mention that it is illegal for DH to live out? Wasn't it risky if found out? I may not dare to do that. But, do you know whether for a DH to sleep in the living room is a common practice or most employers try to get an apt with maid's room?

It is not common practise for the DH's to sleep in the living room - most larger homes (even smaller homes in HK) have a room specific for amahs - mine didn't and I didn't have the space to give up for one of my own kids - they deserve their privacy as well (I don't think DH are supposed to share with teenagers anyway - I think there is an age limit.
Re getting caught - no i didn't think it was a real problem - she stayed across the road from the police station and walked to work every morning and in 3 years was never questioned. But we live in the country where the police are less tense about everything - and the immigration dept never venture.

Thanks witley.Your reply has certainly touched the human conscience. Frankly, I have not given this issue deep thoughts.I asked because a lot of apartment housing i browsed through in the website doesn't seem to have a maid's room. Moreover, somebody told me that it is common practice to put them in the living room! And dimac4, thanks for your frank reply.
