child care experience

ORIGINAL POST

I am looking for a maid that has experience with new born babies as well as the other basics such as cooking, cleaning etc. I have interviewed some potentially good Dhs that only have preschool experience but since they have children of their own they say it is not a problem. Would I be wise to employ someone on this basis or should I really stick to those that have had recent experience? Hope this is not a silly question! Also does anyone know what the Baby Care course is at the YMCA? Is it good?

Please do not post recommendations and details of any helpers on the forums. We have a dedicated section for this already:

I was in the same situation as you 1.5 years ago. Most of them have pre-school experience and not infant. When you ask, they always explain to you that they have children themselves but I think that is a complete different thing. Some cases are they have nannies in their own countries to look after their own babies so that they can work here. Whichever case that is not relevant. You want someone professional, and we all know that not every mother know how to handle babies. So i would suggest you stick to it - someone has hands on experience with babies. I dont know whether you need to work or not and if you do, make sure you check that your potential helper is able to look after yr baby independently and with the least supervision. I learn from my own mistake. Hope this helps.

thanks for the tip. I have already hired one and know her limitations as her previous employer was very upfront with me! I will be going through all this with her when she starts to see what she can and can't do and then we can train her up so to speak!! Thank you for all your replies as well!
