My wife and I are expecting our first child in March and are thinking about getting a helper as she will be going back to work a few months later. The question I have, is we've never had a helper before and I wonder if it is really needed.
Our primary reason for getting one would be to look after our child during the days when my wife is away (She may only go back part time at first and I run my company out of our apartment). When my wife is home, will there be enough for an Amah to do as we will want to be with our child?
Our apartment is only 1200 sf and it includes an Amah's room (although I would call it a pantry). Also, there is no seperate bathroom if we hired an Amah but we don't mind her using our second bathroom. Any ideas or personal experiences?
Anyone have any thoughts about Amah room size?

There would be plenty for a helper to do, the cleaning, washing, ironing even the cooking. That will free up all your time to spend with the baby plus time for yourselves a a couple. Our helper used to share a bathroom with the children in our old house and it worked fine. Although the amahs rooms tend to be really tiny here, often they're still quite glad to have their own space. To make the most of the room get as high a bed as you can to free up all the wall space, so you should be able to fit a cupboard, desk and chair underneath. Try and put nice curtains and bedding in too.

Thanks Ma, but right now we're really just doing our research. I don't think we'll need one until Jan or February as we are heading overseas for 8 weeks. No sense hiring a helper just in time for us to leave. Thank you for your offer though.

Re: your question about whether there would be enough for a helper to do - in my experience definitely. Our helper joined us a week before our first baby and we found there was definitely enough to do - the washing and ironing created by a new baby etc etc. I'm very glad we got her when we did.
Re: room size, our previous flat had a very small amah room but did have a separate bathroom. I was worried about the size, but tried to deal with it by showing her what she would be living in when we interviewed her (leaving it ultimately up to her to decide if she could bear to live in the space) and then getting her a raised bed with a pole underneath it so she could use the space under her bed for storage and as a wardrobe, i.e. maximising the small space. I also bought pretty linen and generally tried to make it as pleasant as I could.

We got ours made by a shop called something like the iron bed company or the steel bed company - do a search on this site, someone asked this before and there was a response with the proper name. It is at the top end (i.e. Kennedy Road end) of Queens Road East same side as Hopewell Centre. They "custom" made ours with a hanging rail underneath,

Mind if I ask how much that cost? Thanks for the recommendation.

Ikea does a metal high bed frame which when I measured it would just about fit in our helpers room which is tiny. Its about $1k.At least with a high bed you still have all the floor space still to use.
