Sick helper

Hi everyone,

My helper has been with us for 1 year now. For the past 2 months, she constantly gets sick every time she comes after her Sunday off.

I bought her vitamines, I advise her to wear warm clothes, I send her to see a doctor each time she is unwell, I ask her to rest when she is unwell. I don't know what's wrong with her.

Therefore I want to send her for a full medical check-up. We see a university doctor and can not send her there. I wonder if anyone can tell me what doctor would do this for a reasonable price. Probably I'd like her blood to be tested, I am not sure.

I have a 7 month old baby, a 7 yo child, and her sicknesses make me feel very uncomfortable because every week she is unweel from Mon to Wed. Does anyone else have a similar problem?

i wonder where she goes on sundays? wanchai, taking drugs and drinking and having multiple sex partners. no wonder she is sick! why would you pay for her? they have their own network of dr's. tell her to go to one (around $180) u pay if you insist and u get the report.

Thank you Cara, I can claim doctor's visits but the insurance does not cover medical examination. I want her blood to be tested and may be an x-ray of her lungs, I am not sure.

As to Brideman's comment, he may be right of course, but I'd rather know that she is healthy (i.e., no Hep B, TB or whatever) and I'd prefer not to know what she does during her days off as soon as she starts taking care of her health.

Nuri, didn't your helper get a medical before you hired her? Call Good Link Consultants at 2369-0816 or go to their website. They offer a helper health care screening for HK$500 and you can also pay extra for other checks. It's a basic screening but covers pregnancy, Hep B and a Chest Xray, among others. If you have HSBC points you can also redeem a voucher for 500 points for a discounted helper screening package at Quality Healthcare for HK$560.

In any case, I think the coincidence is something I would be worried about if your helper is only getting sick after her day off. I guess there is a fine line between being compassionate and being a sucker.

Tsuiwah,

Thanks a lot for the phone number! And yes, my helper was OK when I hired her 1 year ago: clear chest, no problems whatsoever, didn't get sick at all. Her sicknesses after her days off make me feel worried... I mean, how can it possibly happen for 2 months in a row??? She is a good helper, I used to tell my friends how lucky I was... but somehow she changed after one year. Another problem is she doesn't like to take prescribed antibiotics. She says she can't swallow them as she'd vomit. It's just stupid as I have 2 kids and need not unnecessary exposure to a sick person. Of course, it takes much longer to recover from a, say, flu if you remain untreated! I'm not so sure about those flu symptoms any more, though...

Birdman you are amazing.... How can you assume such things about this helper when you don't even know anything about her. If there were as many helpers in Wanchai as people think there are, the clubs would be overflowing. Maybe she is eating food that a friend gives her that is making her sick.

Nuri... I agree with yoru concern, you have a small child to be worried about, so I would lay down the law with her, plain and simple, do not give her alternatives.
