As we are considering employing a live in helper in the near future what are the total costs involved in hiring one, and also what is the best way to find one?

Total costs using an agency are typically around HK$ 3000-6000. There is no levy at this time.
The best way to find one is a hotly debated topic. Some people swear by agencies, others will take only personal recommendations. Personally, I think both methods work.
Once you find a helper you want to hire, don't hesitate. The good ones can easily get 2-3 job offers within hours once thy are interviewing.
Good agency (at least I thing so): ACJ 2377 2890. Speak to Irene.

I have found the best way to find a helper is on this site - I joined and paid 200HKD to gain access to the helpers contact numbers. From experience I would suggest you set up at least 10 interviews for a Sunday as half of them wont turn up or contact you if you they have secured employment elsewhere. I am employing mine on 3600HKD per month withh 400HKD food allowance - but this is only for 2 months probationary and then I will increase it to 4000 + 400 and maybe again. Agency wise charge quite a lot of money and dont vet any of them and it doesnt speed up the paperwork so I have done all the paperwork myself - its pretty straightforward and all info can be dowloaded from the immigration website. Get the DH to pickup the contracts from immigration for you and there is a fee of 160 HKD for immigration and about 300 HKD for the Phillipines Consulate (roughly)

axptguy38, I paid HK$880 to an agent in Mongkok. I asked her why it's so cheap and she says it's because I've hired one with no experience. I hope they are not asking her to pay loads over there.
Susie1, apart from agency fees, you'll also have to pay insurance (about HK$1200 per year) and a monthly salary of HK$3580 (is that right?). If you don't want her sharing your food, you'll need to give another HK$300 food allowance. Then at the end, you'll owe her a trip home. That's around HK$1500. So I'd say, all up you're paying a minimum of HK$4100 per month to hire a helper + however many bonuses you give during the 2 year contract.
