what is she doing?

Before starting.. I would like to make clear that I think is not my buisness what my helper does on her day off.

Having said that I'm lately getting worried of what she is doing on her day off sice she is acting kind of wired..

Usually on her day off(sunday) she leave the house at 6am if not earlier and when she comes back at night she have a worring tired face with black bags under her eyes and looks very very tired .she usually manage to recover a rested appareance by tuesday.

Lately she comes home with latest mobile phone model, new ipod ,so on,all expensive stuff that I wonder how she pays since with her salary she have to support her family.

I'm start thinking she might do part time work, and I'm not very happy about it,since I'm the one who guarantee her visa and I don't want to have trouble with immigration.

How do you think I can figure it out what's going on?

Try to talk with her. I mean, when I say talk with her, it doesn't mean you have to interrogate her, bombard her with questions what she's really up to. From what you describe it seems that she's having some problems that she vent all her frustrations to splurging. Well, ok, it's none of your business if she spends her money the way she does, but if it bothers you so much, at least be a friend to your helper. I'm sure she will appreciate that. Perhaps she would even tell you the truth whether she's working part time or not.

Honestly I don't care how she is spending the money she earns working;but buying a HK$6000 mobilephone and so on, makes me wondering where she gets the money ,especially after I see her coming home looking destroyed after getting out at 5 or6o'clock in the morning.

I mean ,is there any other helpers going out so early in the morning?

Well, I think she really is working on her off days. Still the best thing you could do is to have a word with her. I hope you don't mind me asking, why allow her to go out on Sunday so early? Normally, employers allow their maids to go out as early as 8am or 9am. BTW, I'm a Filipina helper too but now working in Beijing. I worked in Hongkong before too and during my off days I was allowed to go out by 8am not unless I have some important thing to do earlier than 8am. I would come home very tired too (around 8pm or 9pm) but after a good night sleep I was fine the next morning. I never worked part time since my family was satisfied with the amount I was sending every month and besides it's illegal.

My first Boss was very supportive thopugh. There were times I would come home feverish and became sick the next morning. I was looking after two young girls. My lady Boss and I were like sisters. We had an open communication.

I hope you can start communicating with your helper. I'm sure you will never have problems in the future!

Good luck.

Dear Ezbabes,

I never thought I should have gave her a time by which she can leave the house, usually I only tell her by what time I expect her to be home.

Also on Sunday I have never noticed what time she goes out ,cause it's my holiday too and I like to sleep as much as possible.

I once ask her where she goes so early in the morning,in a very friendly way, and she just says...to the church.???which also happend to be located 5minutes from our place.

Our helper is a very reserved person so even the friendly approach to the situation is not that easy because she don't feel like having a conversation that goes out of employer/employee relationship.

Probably she might sense that If I knew that she does part time I won't be happy about it.

As an Employer which kind of trouble I can accour to if smthig happen to her during part time? What about for her?

By the way, you need to give your helper a 24-hour rest period each week. If you say she can't leave the house until 8am then you can't ask her to start work on Monday morning until 8am either. Same if you give her an evening curfew.

joy2 here are some possible sources how your helper manage to buy her latest gadgets: from her salary ( maybe she doesn't send much to her family back home), made a loan from the agencies, works partime all day during her day-off or perhaps she has a boyfriend who spoils her.

My helper leaves the flat on a Sunday morning at some ridiculousy early hour, and that is to go and work in the Church all day. I have no problem with that and she will come home about 8pm on a Sunday evening.

So, maybe your helper does go to Church that early on a Sunday...mine certainly does.
