Hi Guys,
We will be leaving for New York, and we are really, really sad to leave our life in HK.
We loved the climate, the food, the people....and also our helper.
I know that we can not take her overthere...but can someone tell me if we can employ someone doing similar tasks in New York?
Thanks
Julie

Sure, but you'll be paying way more than here. Our nanny in Connecticut worked 8-6 five days a week and made around US$40k/year.

Hi Axpt,
That means more than 3000 USD a month??? That is very expensive!
Did she help with the house chores for this price?
Please support our advertisers:
Why don't you just get a part-time cleaner to do the chores from an agency in NY, you won't have to have them live in either. Much cheaper.

The nanny did not help with house chores. We had cleaners that came in for that. As Susie1 says getting a cleaner for the chores is the way in the US.
And yes, it was expensive to have a nanny. Daycare is a cheaper option.

Thanks guys for your answers! That's going to be hard to go back to reality!
Chris, I don't know when we will be moving overthere, not finalised yet. Could be 3 months or 6 months. I will definitely recommend my helper on this website when we know when we are leaving as I want to make sure she founds a nice family (she deserves it).

Hi prissie, it is not too easy to take a helper to another Western country, due to immigration rules and labour laws of the country concerned. In the US, even if they apply to take the helper--a lot of paper work, they must pay the helper at least the minimum wage recommended by the country they enter, which will still be more than the cost of a helper in HK. Plus the helper would have to provide her own medical care cover, accomodation, and any taxes on her wage, and any air fares from a longer distance to fly to visit relatives in their home country. If they had her as a type of live in Nanny, they would have to pay her an even higher wage. Many helpers taken to other Western countries are also known to have 'done a runner' once they get used to where they are, in the pursuit of a 'better' job, until the border agencies catch up with them.

All as Susie1 says, except that live-in tends to make it cheaper since housing is provided.

@prissie: The US will generally not issue visas to domestic helpers because of incredibly high flight risk once they land in the country. I've spoken to visa officials at the consulate for this information.
It's a different story for Canada, where immigration requirements are much less strict.

Indeed. Salaries for domestic staff in the tri-state area in general, and in New York in particular, is very high compared to most of the rest of the country.

Hi there,
My current helper needs to return back to the Philippines and I'm looking for a good helper to join our family. Please let me know if you decide not to take your helper to NY.

Have you ever considered a au-pair? Wage is usually around US $250 per week. But you will have to go through a au-pair agency, they charge around 10,000 US in fees. That would be the cheeked option.
