Curious how to proceed - our DH is good but not excellent and certainly not bad (as compared to stories we hear)

bear in mind every family is different and there is no right answer...you shouldn't feel obligated to give a bonus and your helper shouldn't expect one if her performance is mediocre

some people get 100k-150k monthly housing allowances and complain that they have to cut back on their lifestyle while others get by on a less than 10k per month on rent

WoDer, you are a lot more generous with your helper than we are with ours. We give her a month's salary (a lot less than $10K). We also give her a flight home and 2 weeks off (hardly a big deal as we are away for most of that time); even if you add the $3K value of the flight, we still come in at less than $10k.

We give her a much smaller amount in her Laisee packet at CNY. She opted for the larger bonus at Christmas, as that is when most of her large expenses arise.

Our helper gets a small gift at Christmas/Birthday, $300 lai see at CNY, that's it. Bonuses are not automatic, but once you start you'll probably need to keep it up.

We give our helpers presents for Christmas, plus a few hundred dollars bonus, and money for their children's christmas presents...., and same for birthday, and CNY, a red packet.

At the end of EACH contract, (they renew with us)... we give them a raise, plus a 1 month bonus plus go home for 2 weeks every year.

Every family is different, and just do what you think she deserves, and what makes you comfortable budget wise. but yes.... it's true, remember, you can only keep going UP with the bonus... can't shrink it unless you change helper.

Every Christmas we give our helper an extra month's salary (as opposed to Chinese New Year). She also gets small presents from the children at Christmas and a lai see packet at CNY.
