need advice,my helper at 9pm,announce me that her previous employer always give her the good friday off so she was expecting me to do the same ,but since it's not statutory holiday I already make my plans for tomorrow and I tell her that if she was asking that in advance i could have organize myself .
She make such a bad face like if i was treating her like a slave......I'm such a bad employer?

You're not a bad employer. She's not entitled a day off. If you gave her the day off, it's a bonus for her. She should not make assumptions. Plus, you're right, she didn't give you much notice. Take it in stride...

Wow, I feel like I've been scammed! My helper told me that they get ALL 3 days off today, tomorrow and of course Sunday off, but that she was going to work on Saturday for me.

to Tc:My helper is Filipino but I'm Christian Catholic too, infact even if I didn't send her for a day-off I offer her to let her go for the Holy Mass and she refuse...she want the all day!Plus when I need to ask her to change her off-day schedule I always do it with a month in advance,if this holiday was so important to her maibe SHE should have be so sensible to tell me in advance!

Joy2, she probably wanted to hang out with her friends in additional to Mass. You've been kind enough to give her advance notice, she should pay you the same respect, if only a few days ahead. Oh, and I just found out my mother-in-law's helper told her she was supposed to get four days holidays too but she would work on Sat and Mon to be generous.... My MIL believed her and now she's fuming at home while her helper is enjoying her extra day off that she got from lying...

The statutory holidays for helpers in hk are 12 days. You can find the details from any agents.

TC has got a good point. I have a list for all holidays DH's are entitled to and hand it on my refridgerator just so there's no confusion. I guess honesty is hard to come by these days....

Much to my husband's amazement and partial disgust, I gave our helper the four days off. Aside from the 12 days stat holidays, helpers essentially work very long hours, six days a week with one day off...and so on and so on and so on. It's nice to have a break....All of us need one from time to time. She looks after my little one and dont want her burnt out or over tired. She is after all, a human being, away from her family, not getting paid that much (we pay her well above award tho) and deserves a break every now and then. Also, she is more Christian than our household put together. We are home and dont go to church. I wouldnt want her job (and I treat her very well). Just a thought....
