my 52 year old helper doesn't have the energy to help me with my 3 kids and cleaning so i'd like to get someone younger, say 25-35, but i'm frightened to hire anyone whose single in case they get pregnant. Then again, i'm frightened to hire a married person who might get pregnant on a trip home. what happens if your helper does get pregnant? do they get paid leave, etc.??

yes they do get paid for their materinity leave etc. You fear is justified and there is not much you can do about - I suggest you hire someone in her early 40-ies with already grown up kids, or someone single in her late 30-ies - early 40-ies - probably unlikely they will have kids as well....

FDH are covered by labour law here as is everyone else. This means if they get pregnant you cannot fire them, unless gross misconduct, and 10 weeks paid maternity leave. Same for any employer in HK. There is nothing you can do about it, one of the risks of employing any female in whatever capacity.

hahahihi most of us FDHs, once we signed a renewal contract with our employers are extra careful while were on vacation, that is not to get pregnant. Carelessnes of an FDHs getting pregnant is 1 in every 50s. So come on, just hire a younger one and worry less about this issue. But please let your current DH finish her contract first la. Be nice to her.

I've been very very nice to her, but she's really taking advantage. Only 10 weeks off is not much. where I'm from, it's 3 or 6 months, so 10 weeks is not too bad! I've been very very nice to her, but she's really taking advantage of me. She's in her room while I'm cooking and she can't look after more than one kid at a time and my kids aren't young. she's grumpy, can't follow a list and resents things. This summer i gave her a long vacation and it wasn't long enough, etc! i am tired of it!
