Sorry I posted this message incorrectly in another thrread....I am a DH newbie here. I want to hire one direclty from the Phils myself (without an agency) but am having a tough time finding out all the info I need e.g contract, who pays plane tickets etc, sponsoring visa etc, time it takes etc. I already checked out the HK immigration website but that is not user friendly. Can someone please contact me at audres@hotmail.com ? or post your reply here. Thank you very much for your help!

If you go to Immigration, you can pick up an A4 sized booklet (yellow in colour) entitled "Guidebook for the Employment of Domestic Helpers from Abroad". It will tell you almost everything you need to know.
You could call Immigration on 2824 6111 to see if there's any chance they could mail one to you.
The only important thing the book doesn't mention is that you MUST use an employment agency if your chosen helper is coming to Hong Kong to work as a DH for the first time. (I learned this the hard way...)
Also, I've heard the list of required documents is out of date. When you call / collect your booklet, make sure they give you the most up-to-date version.
If they give you a yellow one dated 12/2005 on the front cover, if I were you I'd ask them to go over p17 (List of Documents Required for Application of Domestic Helpers from Abroad) with you and see if there's anything else that needs to be added.

Okay thanks to everyone for your replies. Does any one know why you must use an agency? This would be the first time the DH is coming to HK to work and the DH is a referral from my sister in Taiwan.

(source from the website of Philippines Consulate)
For qualified overseas Filipino workers and employers, contract verification service is provided to determine qualification of the employer and the worker to enter into an employment contract bilaterally, without the intervention of a placement agency.
Only employers belonging to the following categories are qualified to apply under the name hire program:
1) Employers who are immediate members of the family of Heads of State/Government;
2) Employers who are Ministers, Deputy Ministers and other Senior Government Officials of the host country;
3) Employers who are Senior Officials of the diplomatic corps and duly recognized international organizations;
4) Employers residing in countries where Foreign Placement Agencies do not operate;
5) Employers who are assigned or re-assigned to Hong Kong SAR from other countries and who will bring with them their household workers;
6) Former employers of those household workers who have left Hong Kong SAR and who stayed in the Philippines for some time;
7) Filipino employers who are residents in Hong Kong SAR and who will employ their household workers in the Philippines;
8) Employers who will employ those household workers who have been terminated earlier and were asked by the Hong Kong Immigration Department to leave for the Philippines where they will await for the issuance of their visa.

I have just been through this myself.
Actually the Philippines Consulate won't just advise you to use an agency, they will refuse to notarise your helper's application unless you do so. And Immigration won't process her papers unless they've been notarised. This only applies to helpers who've not worked as DH in Hong Kong before.
If you want to employ a helper who falls into this category, I'm afraid you have absolutely no choice but to use an agency. Or of course, you could always choose someone with experience of working in HK.

Wow, thanks everyone for all your very helpful replies. I really appreciate it. It looks like I will be using an agency to get my DH. Thanks again to all for your time.

Hi, I am about to do the same thing: hiring a filipina referred to come to HK for the first time. In that case, do I need to shop around for the agency or the charges are pretty standardized?
Much thanks!

If you want to use an agency I suggest that you use our services - AsiaXPAT charges the helper NOTHING to help them find a job - and our charges to employers are less than most if not all agencies charge.
For more info on this click here and contact Evelyn: http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/domestichelp/

Hi,
I'm looking at hiring a new helper who is only here on a tourist visa and it will be her first employment in HK. I take it from previous comments that I will have to go through an angency to process her application - is this correct?
Has anyone else gone through the same process?
Thanks.

ozcalgal, I am not sure if it required, but if I were you I'd use the AsiaXpat agency. Evelyn is SO efficient...she made my life much easier. I am pretty sure that if I had done it myself, I'd have missed out on something or given a copy when they wanted an original etc. It was great to never have to leave the house (she picked up all of the forms from my husband's office etc.). Well worth the cost IMHO! I've used another agency in the past and it was a nightmare.

Agree re. service level of Evelyn Reyes - made both my and my new helper's lives much easier.

Evelyn is one of the most experienced and ethical people in her field and came highly recommended to us when we hired her to head up our new agency.

Ok, I will give her a call - thanks for the tip!

We have just hired a new helper direct from the PH. His mother (our friends helper did all the work and paid the agency fees, $3,400). We just filled in the forms and gace the money for the flight and tax. A new helper coming to HK has to have had a minimum of 2 years experience working as a domestic helper, in their own or other country, obviously most haven't, but the agencies must have ways round this.

Thanks CD. The Asia Xpat agency cannot help me because my helper has not worked in HK before. So I will have to use another agency. Can you recommend the agency you used..? Thanks.

Also, will I be expected to pay the agency fee or do teh helpers pay this. My friend also hired direct from the PH and her helper paid the agency fees.

Both times we have hired direct from the PH our new helpers relatives paid the fees. The first time we hired the sister of our friend's helper, she said she was having to send her money home every month to support her sisters kids so would rather pay for her sister to come out here so she could keep her wages for herself. The second, (who arrived today), was paid for by his mum, who also works for a friend of ours, as does his wife and aunty. His father is also here. Sorry I don't know the agencys name but I think my husband has the phone number somewhere, I'll try and find it.

Question: I just spoke to Immigration who says that they, Immigration, do not require the use of an agency.
Is it the Philippines Consulate, then, that requires the use of the agency?
Thanks.
Please support our advertisers:
Yes. The Philippine Consulate requires the use of agency in hiring maids that are presently in the Philippines.
