ORIGINAL POST

I'm hiring a DH from the Phils to come work for me in HK (first time FT maid). The agency has told me I need to pay an additional HK$9,000 to cover her HK tax for the 2-year contract. I've never heard of this before...anyone else know about it? thanks,

M

Here's a link to the document that will explain the levy in detail. You don't need to pay the full $9,600 (not $9,000) in a single lump sum. You can choose to pay it in 6-monthly instalments of $2,400. And as you are at risk of losing any 'unused' portion in the evnt of an early termination combined with no subsequent hiring (within 4 months of termination) then it makes no sense to take the lump sum option.

Whatever they call it, it is a TAX paid by domestic helpers. That was what it was called to begin with until the very public outcry both from the helpers and some employers. Afterall, everyone who earns less than HK$9k is exempted.

So what the government did? They started charging the employers a levy of HK 9600 every contract and REDUCED the basic salary by 400. Multiply that by 24 months-- the duration of the contract- and you get HK9600.

And that added an awful lot to the discussion that was dead and buried until you managed to dredge it up. Well done sQ!

10 days is hardly dead, TC and there is/was hardly no discussion and certainly not an awful lot.
