I would greatly appreciate any recommendations on air conditioners and heating units for our DH's room. The room is about 50 sq. ft. and has 3 square windows. It is very hot and humid in the summer and quite cold during a couple of months in the winter. I know nothing about these units and would like advice on btu/hour, hp, models, shops, anything at all. Thank you for your help! Kathleen

A fan will work in the summer, and a small blow heater in the winter.
Or am I being too simple?

dimac4, would you feel comfortable sleeping without air conditioning in the summer?

I do sleep without AC on in the summer - we have a fan (ceiling) and it works fine.
The DH's come from countries which are as hot or hotter than HK, most do not have a/c or a fan and they still manage to sleep OK. It is what you are used to.

If you do not sleep with the a/c then give her a ceiling fan. As for it being cold... buy her an electric blanket..
If you want to be a super generous amazing employer that she may or may not appreciate, buy her the A/C unit. the cheapest 9,000 BTU should be fine.

I think a 9000 BTU unit would freeze her to death.
Agree that the helper could cope without an A/C and that it is not abusive to not offer an A/C. We have an A/C in our helpers room and she is welcome to use it. However, I know when I was growing up, I suffered through many a hot and humid summer night with just a small fan. It's not the end of the world.

A fan should be sufficient in their small room. We hardly ever have the A/C on at night, we have a fan at the bottom of the bed which is normally enough. A heated blanket or a hot water bottle in the winter. The kids love having a hot water bottle in their beds.

A what if scenario - if the helper had to pay for her A/C and electricity for heating and cooling, she would opt not to have one but to find an alternative - a fan and a hot water bottle - and she would be happy with that decision.
