Does anyone know if a domestic helper in Hong Kong is entitled to enroll in a part time post graduate university course?
The helpers in HK work full time, and live in the employers house, their job description per HK Imm does not include studying part time, plus I don't think their wage would cover the University fees. They are allowed to attend certain job related short courses, such as first aid, if their employer wishes them to do that.
Yes, and also in cooking classes.
We also get a large number coming to us for language classes.
I personally know a DH who is working on her teaching cert. She had the qualifications to be accepted into the programme. She studies with the knowledge of her employer. She is finishing a contract at about the same time she sits for the cert exam.
Do not make the mistake that a DH does not qualifiy for things based simply on the fact they are domestic helpers. They enjoy the same rights as any other with regard to continuing education. It is all about timing and the desire to work their heads off at two things. The labour Dept does not descrimminate. The terms of the DH contract does not state they cannot study on their own time. It is all down to whether or not they qualify to be accepted into a programme of study and have the ability to attend the classes and pass.
Hmmm, sounds like your average HK person who takes extra classes to further their own job prospects.
